Queensland Diesel Prices Jump 6 Cents While Victoria and NSW Motorists Get Relief

Right, so here's the thing. If you're running a diesel ute or truck up in Queensland, you might've noticed the servo prices looking a bit rough this week. We're seeing diesel averages sitting around 214.5 cents per litre across the state, which is about 6 cents higher than yesterday. That's a nearly 3 percent jump in one day, and fair dinkum, that adds up quick when you're filling a 70 litre tank.

Now, you'd be mad not to shop around if you're in the Sunshine State right now. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive servos is sitting at about 59 cents, with some spots charging as low as 178.9 cents while others are taking the mick at 237.9 cents. That's a massive difference, and it pays to know where to look.

What's Happening Down South

Here's where it gets interesting. While Queensland cops the increase, motorists in Victoria and NSW are actually seeing prices come down a bit. Victoria diesel averages dropped about 0.7 cents to around 190.1 cents per litre, and NSW is down 1.2 cents to about 193 cents.

For my mates in Melbourne, the western suburbs are looking particularly competitive. Deer Park has diesel as low as 173.9 cents if you know where to look, and Corio near Geelong is showing prices from 172.9 cents. That's about 40 cents cheaper than what some Queensland servos are charging.

Over in regional Victoria, spots like Wendouree near Ballarat are showing diesel from 171.9 cents, and Moe out in Gippsland has prices starting at 173.5 cents. Worth keeping an eye on if you're passing through.

Sydney's Western Suburbs Holding Strong

Now if you're out my way in Sydney, the western suburbs are doing the right thing by diesel drivers. Fairfield is sitting pretty competitive with prices around 175.5 to 178.9 cents. Granville is even better, with all three stations there matching at 176.5 cents. Can't argue with that consistency.

Auburn is another good option with diesel from 176.5 cents, and Smithfield has some servos as low as 174.5 cents. If you're filling up a work ute or van, these suburbs are where you want to be.

The NT Story

Spare a thought for our mates up in the Northern Territory. They're looking at an average of 239.8 cents for diesel, with prices ranging all the way from 174.5 cents in Katherine to a whopping 399 cents out in the remote communities. That's a 224 cent spread, which is just bonkers.

If you're up that way, Katherine is definitely the spot to fill up, with prices averaging around 181.2 cents. Katherine South is similar at about 183.4 cents. Winnellie in Darwin is showing prices around 178.5 to 185.9 cents if you're in the Top End.

South Australia and WA

South Australia is sitting middle of the pack at about 195.6 cents for diesel, up about 1.4 cents from yesterday. The spread there is only 30 cents though, so prices are pretty consistent across the state.

Western Australia is looking decent at 190.2 cents average, basically unchanged from yesterday. Perth metro suburbs like Kwinana Beach have diesel from 169.9 cents, and Byford is even cheaper at 171.3 cents. Bassendean is showing 173.3 cents if you're north of the river.

What This Means for Your Wallet

Look, end of the day, a 6 cent jump doesn't sound like much, but let's do the maths. On a 70 litre tank, that's an extra $4.20 per fill. If you're a tradie filling up twice a week, that's over $400 extra per year. Not exactly small change.

The smart play right now if you're in Queensland is to check prices before you fill. The difference between 178.9 and 237.9 cents means you could save over $40 on a single tank by driving an extra few minutes to the right servo.

For the rest of us down south, enjoy the slight relief while it lasts. These things tend to bounce around, and what goes down usually comes back up. Fill up when you see a good price and keep an eye on the interactive fuel map to find the best deals near you.

Can't argue with that, right?
