Sydney Western Suburbs Cop 36 Cent Petrol Price Surge as Price Cycle Kicks In
Right, so if you filled up in Penrith yesterday arvo, you'd be kicking yourself this morning. Overnight, unleaded petrol prices have jumped a whopping 36.5 cents per litre at servos across the area. That's not a typo. We're talking about going from around 179 cents to 215.9 cents just like that.
Here's the thing, right. This is the fuel price cycle doing what it does best and taking the mick out of motorists who didn't fill up at the right time. And Penrith isn't copping it alone. Premium 95 has jumped 37.5 cents and Premium 98 is up a massive 42 cents. If you drive something that needs the good stuff, you're really feeling it today.
The Damage Across Greater Sydney
Let me break down what's happening across the western suburbs this Tuesday morning, 9th December 2025.
Penrith is wearing the worst of it with that 36.5 cent jump on ULP. But head down the road to Casula and you'll find the complete opposite story. Unleaded there has actually dropped nearly 30 cents to around 162 cents per litre. Fair dinkum, that's a 54 cent difference between two suburbs that are barely half an hour apart.
Ingleburn is somewhere in the middle of this mess, with Premium 95 up over 31 cents. Campbelltown has seen similar jumps, with Premium 95 up 27 cents and Premium 98 up over 22 cents.
Meanwhile, over in the east, Randwick has copped a nearly 28 cent increase on regular unleaded. So it's not just the westies dealing with this one.
Where to Find the Good Deals
Now, you'd be mad not to take advantage of what's still available. Here's where the servos are doing the right thing:
Liverpool has seen prices drop over 20 cents, with unleaded sitting around 166 cents. That's worth the trip if you're nearby.
Heatherbrae up near Newcastle has dropped nearly 22 cents on ULP, sitting at around 167 cents. If you're heading up the M1 today, fill up there.
Casula as I mentioned is sitting pretty at 162 cents. For my money, that's one of the best deals in Sydney right now.
For those in NSW more broadly, the state average for diesel has actually dropped 2 cents overnight to around 191.8 cents. Not huge, but every bit counts when you're running a tradie ute or doing long hauls.
How the Rest of Australia Is Faring
Victoria diesel has gone the other way, up about 1.4 cents to 190.8 cents average. But there's still good value out there. Moe in Gippsland is showing diesel from 166.9 cents, and Ballarat has it from 170 cents. Deer Park and Corio in Melbourne's west are also worth checking out.
Western Australia continues to offer some of the cheapest fuel in the country. Kwinana Beach has diesel from 167 cents, and Forrestdale is showing 164.5 cents. That's almost 30 cents cheaper than what some Sydney suburbs are paying.
Up in the Northern Territory, Katherine is actually doing alright with diesel from 174 cents, which is surprisingly competitive given how remote it is.
What This Means for Your Wallet
Look, a 36 cent jump on a 50 litre tank means you're paying an extra $18 to fill up. That's three coffees, or nearly a slab of tinnies on special. Not nothing, right?
The pattern we're seeing is typical of the Sydney price cycle. Prices drop gradually over a week or two, then bang, overnight they jump back up. The trick is filling up when prices are at their lowest, usually mid to late week.
For those in the affected areas around Penrith, Campbelltown, and Randwick, your best bet today is to drive to Casula or Liverpool if you're desperate. Otherwise, wait it out. These high prices usually start dropping again within a few days as servos compete for your business.
Worth keeping an eye on the interactive fuel map to track prices in real time. The difference between filling up at the wrong servo versus the right one could be $25 or more on a single tank.
End of the day, a bit of planning means more cash in your pocket for the important stuff. Can't argue with that.
