Adelaide Sits at the Top of the Cycle While the Eastern States Get Some Relief
Right, so here's the thing. While half the country woke up this morning to cheaper diesel, the poor buggers over in South Australia copped the opposite. As of around 2pm AEST on the 5th of June 2026, the SA diesel average has lifted to 216.0 cents, up 8.6 cents on yesterday. That makes it one of only two mainland states still heading up while everyone else comes off the boil.
Now, I've been banging on about the SA cycle for a few weeks now, and this is the bit I reckoned was coming. South Australia has climbed right up to the top of the cycle, and when you're sitting up the top there's only one way out, and that's the long slow slide back down. Trouble is, that slide hasn't kicked off yet, so SA motorists are paying near the dearest they'll cop this round.
The eastern states caught a break
Compare that to the east. Over in New South Wales, diesel prices dropped about 25 cents overnight to a 214.4 average. Out at Beresfield near Newcastle they've come down a whopping 38 cents to 201.8, and down in Greenacre in Sydney's west you can fill the ute for as little as 179.7. Fair dinkum, that's the sort of relief SA drivers can only dream about right now. Even Western Australia and the Territory eased back overnight, so the map this morning is pretty clear. The east and the west are cooling off, and South Australia is parked up the top on its own, give or take Queensland which nudged up a touch as well.
Where the value is hiding in SA
Here's the practical bit, because that's what you came for. The cheapest servos across the state are still asking around 195 cents for diesel, while plenty of the dearer joints around Adelaide are well past 216. That's a 20 cent gap between the best and the worst in the very same week, and you'd be mad not to use it. On a 60 litre tank, 20 cents a litre is twelve bucks. That's a slab of your preferred amber, or a decent counter meal down the local. Same fuel, same week, just a bit of homework.
And it's not only the diesel mob who need to pay attention. The petrol cycle runs the exact same way, so if you're filling up on unleaded petrol prices, it's the same story. When your state is sitting at the top like SA is right now, you only splash in enough to get you through, then you hold off and let it come back down. Brimming right up at the peak is just handing the servo extra coin for nothing.
So when do you pull the trigger
Keep half an eye on the trend and work out the best time to fill up for your patch. South Australia usually gives you a decent run down the cheap end before it turns around again, so the smart play is to fill right up on the way down, not on the way up. If you topped up this week and you're not running on fumes, do yourself a favour and wait a few days. The drop is coming, you've just got to be a bit patient for it.
For my eastern states readers, it's the other way round. NSW has just had a solid drop, so if you're anywhere near Beresfield or the western Sydney servos, now's the time to brim it before the cycle turns back up on you. These things never sit still for long, and the bottom of the cycle is exactly where you want to be filling the tank.
Look, end of the day, none of us can control what the big oil companies do. But we can control when we pull into the driveway. South Australia's dear this week and that's just the cycle doing its thing. Cop it sweet if you genuinely need a fill, but if you can hang on a few days, your wallet will thank you. A bit of timing beats any loyalty card going around. Can't argue with that.
Keep an eye on it, and I'll see you at the bowser.
