Ballarat Petrol Splits 26 Cents as Wendouree Lifts While Golden Point Holds at 169.9

The number that caught my eye this morning is 25.7 cents. That is how far apart the cheapest and the dearest standard unleaded in Ballarat are sitting, and the two ends of that gap are about ten minutes' drive from each other.

As of 8:00am AEST on 26th Jul 2026, every servo reporting in Golden Point has standard unleaded at 169.9. On the western edge of the same city, Delacombe averages 195.6 for the same grade of fuel, in the same city, on the same morning.

The Ballarat spread, suburb by suburb

Sorted cheapest to dearest, the suburb list reads like a map of how far the rise has travelled across town.

Wendouree is the one to watch. Its unleaded lifted 11.9 cents in the most recent reading, taking the servos that moved to around 194. Even after that, the suburb still carries a 40 cent internal spread, so a Wendouree motorist who pulls into the wrong driveway pays roughly 40 cents a litre more than one who drives another block. On a 55 litre tank that is about 22 dollars for the same fuel in the same suburb.

Statistically speaking, this is what the leading edge of a rise looks like. It arrives on the busiest retail strips first and has not yet reached quieter pockets like Golden Point and Ballarat North. Those suburbs are not cheap because of any permanent local advantage. They are cheap because they have not turned yet.

Gippsland has already turned

Along the eastern corridor the same rise arrived a little earlier. Traralgon unleaded added 13.9 cents in the latest reading, the largest standard unleaded move recorded anywhere in the country this morning, and the suburb now averages 193.4. Warragul lifted 9.4 cents to a 190.9 average. Morwell sits at 185.2 and Moe at 187.6, both still under the state figure but climbing.

Victoria's statewide unleaded average is now 189.1, which leaves Golden Point 19.2 cents under it. That is a substantial margin for a suburb doing nothing more special than lagging the cycle, and gaps that wide tend to close quickly once a rise gets going. Current unleaded petrol prices will tell you whether your own suburb has moved yet.

The fuels that did not move

This is a petrol story rather than a broad energy story. Victorian diesel averages 226.9 and eased very slightly overnight, which currently makes Victoria the cheapest state diesel average in the country. Victorian E10 prices average 184.0, roughly 5 cents under standard unleaded, so the ethanol blend remains the better buy for the many Commodores, Falcons and small Japanese hatchbacks that will happily run it.

Premium 95 sits at 205.3 and premium 98 at 213.6. In Gippsland the premium grades moved harder than standard unleaded: Traralgon 95 added 18.8 cents and 98 added 17.7. Drivers who genuinely need 98 for a high compression engine are wearing the sharpest increase in the state.

What the numbers mean for your next fill

Three things follow from the data.

  1. In Ballarat, if your tank is not empty, stay out of the western and central suburbs this week. Golden Point, Ballarat North and Alfredton still have genuine value in them, and that will not last once the rise finishes its run through the city.
  2. In Gippsland the rise has already arrived, so there is little point waiting it out. Fill on need rather than on hope.
  3. Check the cheapest servo in your own suburb instead of assuming the town carries a single price. Traralgon this morning runs from 177.5 up to 210.9, a spread of more than 33 cents inside one town.
