Greenacre Diesel Slips to 233.7 as Western Sydney Servos Hold Under 240
Right, so this one's close to home for me. I spent smoko going through the diesel numbers as of 2:13pm AEST on 31st Aug 2026, and fair dinkum, Western Sydney is having a decent run of it for once. If you're running a ute or a van for work like half the blokes I know, you'll want to hear this.
Greenacre is the pick, but watch the gap
Greenacre has the cheapest diesel I can find in the area right now at 233.7 cents a litre, and that's a proper price in the current market. Here's the thing, right. The same suburb also has a servo charging 253.9 for the exact same fuel. That's a 20.2 cent gap between two driveways you could just about walk between. On a 70 litre ute tank, filling at the cheap end saves you around fourteen bucks. That's lunch for two at the bakery, just for driving an extra minute down the road. You'd be mad not to.
The 239.5 wall
Now here's something a bit odd I noticed. One number keeps popping up all over NSW today, and it's 239.5. All three servos in Granville are sitting on exactly 239.5, not a tenth of a cent between them. Fairfield has four servos packed between 239.5 and 240.9. Out at East Wagga Wagga, all three servos are on 239.5 as well. Same story at the bottom end in Cessnock and Mayfield up Newcastle way. When that many servos land on the same number, nobody's doing you a special favour, that's just where the market has settled. The good news is you don't have to hunt too hard to pay a fair price.
Smithfield and Minto are both a touch better than the wall, with Smithfield starting at 237.5 and Minto at 235.9. Minto's a tidy one actually, all three servos within 4 cents of each other, so you can pull in anywhere without copping a nasty surprise. Smithfield's a different beast, the dearest servo there wants 251.9, so that's a 14 cent spread inside one suburb.
NSW is the cheapest state for diesel right now
Here's a stat for the smoko room. NSW is averaging 253.8 for diesel today, which makes us the cheapest state in the country. Victoria is at 254.0, Queensland is on 254.9, Western Australia sits at 256.5 and South Australia is up at 257.4. The Northern Territory is doing it tough as usual with an average of 293.0. So next time someone at the servo reckons Sydney always gets the raw end on fuel, you can tell them the diesel numbers say otherwise, at least this week.
Down the coast and over the mountains
If you're heading down the south coast, Bomaderry is still doing the right thing by locals. I wrote about them holding under 224 last week, and the cheapest servo there is now 225.9, so it's crept up a touch but it's still nearly 8 cents under the best Western Sydney can offer. Oberon over the mountains has diesel from 237.9, which is handy to know if you're towing out that way. And Wagga Wagga proper runs from 239.5 all the way up to 255.9, so pick your servo carefully because that's a 16 cent spread in one town.
What I'd do
Diesel is still sitting north of 230 nearly everywhere, and nobody's pretending that's cheap. But the spread between servos is where your money is. Twenty cents in Greenacre, sixteen in Wagga, fourteen in Smithfield. Check the diesel prices near you before you fill, and if you want to know what shopping around actually saves you over a year, punch your numbers into the savings calculator and prepare to be annoyed at every servo that's been taking the mick.
Look, end of the day, a bit of planning means more cash in your pocket for the important stuff. Can't argue with that.
