Barossa Petrol Spread Stretches to 61 Cents While Gold Coast Unleaded Holds Under 199

According to pricing data collected at 8:12am AEST on Wednesday 2nd Sep 2026, unleaded in The Barossa Council averages 221.7 cents per litre across five sites, up 20.8 cents on a reference figure of 200.9. That is the largest rise recorded anywhere in the country this round. A move of that size normally means several servos have reset on the same night. This one is a matter of arithmetic. The council figure rests on a very small sample, and that sample includes one of the dearest petrol pumps in South Australia.

The five stations behind the average

At the 11:58am AEST update on Tuesday 1st Sep 2026, the five sites listed under the council in the state data were Angaston Motors at 202.9, Cockatoo Valley Community Store at 207.9, Sedan Post Office and Gifts at 212.9, Lagana's Lyndoch at 222.9 and Punyelroo Caravan Park at 263.9. That is a spread of 61 cents a litre between the cheapest and dearest pump in one council area, or $30.50 on a 50 litre fill.

Take Punyelroo out and the other four average 211.7. The caravan park sits on the River Murray, well east of the valley proper. A low volume riverside stop with tourist trade and long freight legs will always price differently to a town servo on the Barossa Valley Way. The state feed lists it by council area rather than by town, which is how it lands in the same average as Angaston.

What the neighbouring towns say

Nothing in the surrounding data points to a valley wide reset. Nuriootpa, in the valley itself, has four stations between 201.9 and 207.9 with an average of 203.9, and that average eased 1.8 cents over the past week. Tanunda sits at 207.9, down a cent on the week. The council's own 30 day history has its unleaded average between 221.7 and 222.5 for the entire month, and a 20 cent lift does not look like that. The 200.9 reference is better read as a smaller group of stations reporting than as a cheaper valley.

When Ballarat lifted 20.4 cents on 12th Aug, six sites moved together on the same day. Nothing of the sort has happened here.

Where that leaves Barossa motorists

For anyone filling up in the valley, the comparison that matters is Angaston Motors at 202.9 against the rest of the state. Adelaide averages 203.2 across 346 stations, and the cheapest unleaded petrol prices in the state are 188.7 at Costco in Blair Athol. Mount Gambier, where petrol under two dollars returned last week, averages 201.0 across six sites, with Pearl Energy still at 195.5. The valley proper is paying Adelaide money for petrol, and the 20.8 cent lift is a quirk of the sample.

South Australia is now the dearest mainland state for diesel

South Australian diesel averages 257.3 across 369 stations, up 1.7 cents on the day and 7.9 cents above the 249.4 recorded on 15th Aug. Unlike the Barossa figure, that one is a genuine trend. It puts SA above Victoria at 256.4, Western Australia at 255.8, Queensland at 254.6 and NSW at 253.7. The Australian Capital Territory, which was the nation's cheapest diesel market on 15th Aug, has reset to 260.5 across 38 sites and is now the dearest jurisdiction outside the Northern Territory. In the Barossa, diesel prices run from 249.9 at Cockatoo Valley to 266.9 at Lagana's Lyndoch.

The Gold Coast keeps easing

The other end of the national table belongs to Queensland. Pimpama unleaded averages 194.4 across six stations, Southport 196.1 across six and Robina 198.6 across five. Against the previous cycle peak of 219.9, Pimpama is 25.5 cents cheaper. Week on week the move is a more modest 7.1 cents, with Southport down 4.0 and Robina down 7.8. E10 prices are lower again, at 192.3 in Pimpama, 193.3 in Southport, 196.3 in Coomera and 196.6 in Robina. When Labrador slipped under two dollars on 23rd Aug it was the only major mover to do so. Ten days on, the whole northern Gold Coast corridor is there.

What it means at the pump

These are two very different markets. On the Gold Coast the cycle is doing the work for motorists, and anyone in the northern corridor has a good window. In the Barossa, one riverside pump is pulling the average around, so ignore the council wide figure and look at the individual station. South Australian prices are typically lowest from Monday to Wednesday, so pairing the right servo with the best time to fill up remains the most reliable saving on offer.

Location and timing remain the two levers that matter in fuel savings. This week the Gold Coast has the cycle on its side. In the Barossa, the average has moved a long way further than the pumps.
