Langwarrin Unleaded Creeps a Cent a Night While Central Frankston Stays 14 Cents Cheaper

The unleaded figures pulled at 2:07pm AEST on 24th Sep 2026 put six servos in and around central Frankston between 225.4 and 225.9 cents a litre. Drive ten minutes up the Frankston Cranbourne Road into Karingal and Langwarrin and the same fuel costs up to 239.7. That is a 14.3 cent gap, a little over $7 on a 50 litre tank, across a few kilometres of suburban road. The gap is wide, but what interests me more is how precisely it has been held.

Two Shell prices, moving in step

Shell runs its Reddy Express sites around Frankston at two very different levels. The servo on the Nepean Highway has the cheapest unleaded within 8 kilometres at 225.4. The sites in Langwarrin, Langwarrin West and at the Peninsula Gateway on the Frankston Flinders Road all read 238.6.

The daily price history shows these servos are not priced independently. From Friday 18th Sep the Langwarrin pair went 233.7, 234.7, 235.7, 236.7, 238.7 and then 239.7 on Wednesday. Over the same nights the Nepean Highway site went 219.5, 220.5, 221.5, 222.5, 224.5 and 225.5. Every step matched to the cent.

The gap between them is tidier still. Measured against Langwarrin West, the Nepean Highway site sat exactly 10.2 cents cheaper on every day from 10th to 16th Sep. On 17th Sep it came down 2 cents while Langwarrin went up 2, and from then the gap held at exactly 14.2 cents for seven straight days. It narrowed to 13.2 today only because Langwarrin eased 1.1 cents.

Nor is it a local quirk. Shell Reddy Express Endeavour Hills finished on the same numbers as Langwarrin, 239.7 on Wednesday and 238.6 today, while Shell Reddy Express Mulgrave matches Frankston's 225.4. That looks like a handful of price levels set centrally and handed out site by site, rather than a manager reacting to the servo across the road.

Every major does it

BP Australia charges 229.9 at Big Pine on the Nepean Highway and 239.7 at Langwarrin. 7-Eleven asks 230.9 on McMahons Road and 239.7 at Karingal, and EG Ampol has 230.9 on McMahons Road against 239.9 at its Skye Road site in Langwarrin. Across the four brands, Shell included, the dearer sibling sits between 8.8 and 13.2 cents above the cheaper one.

The likely explanation is on the map. Central Frankston has a tight cluster of independents. United and Metro are a few doors apart on Cranbourne Road at 225.9, Astron on Davey Street and Sinopec on the Nepean Highway match them, and Metro in Seaford makes a fifth at the same price. Out along the Langwarrin corridor that competition thins, and the majors sit closer to 239.

Nothing in the data points to anything improper. Pricing by location is legal and common. It does leave a fair question for the motorists who pass the dearer sites every morning, though. Do they know the same brand is cheaper a few kilometres towards the bay?

A fortnight of rises

All of this sits on top of a substantial lift. BP Langwarrin was 211.7 on 10th Sep and United Frankston was 201.3. They now read 239.7 and 225.9, increases of 28.0 and 24.6 cents. Much of it came in one jump, with 7-Eleven Karingal moving from 208.9 to 233.9 between Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th Sep.

Melbourne prices usually drift back down after a jump like that, which is why the week that followed deserves closer scrutiny. Shell's two Langwarrin sites added exactly 10 cents over those seven nights, and BP Langwarrin added 12.

Across the 200 servos nearest the Melbourne CBD, unleaded averages 234.4, with a median of 234.9. Central Frankston is running about 9 cents under that, while Langwarrin and Karingal sit about 5 cents over.

Where the value is

On the Langwarrin side, Metco Langwarrin on the Cranbourne Frankston Road shows 232.5, around 6 to 7 cents under the Shell and BP sites further up the same road. In Baxter, Liberty is 233.5 against 241.9 at the Ampol Foodary.

E10 prices follow the same geography, with United Frankston at 221.9 and Metro Frankston at 223.9.
