Ulverstone Unleaded Holds at 259.9 While Burnie and Devonport Servos Cut to 244.9

At 2:15pm AEDT on 20th Oct 2026, six of the eight servos in and around Ulverstone list unleaded at exactly 259.9. About 15 kilometres east as the crow flies, three Devonport servos sit at 244.9 and Astron East Devonport asks 234.9, a gap of 25 cents along one short stretch of coast.

Since 10th Oct, Burnie and Devonport on Tasmania's north west coast have both had a round of cuts. Ulverstone, which sits between them, has not.

Ten days of official prices

Petrolmate tracked 33 servos using prices lodged with TAS FuelCheck, Tasmania's official fuel price scheme, which records the time of every change. The median unleaded price in each area moved like this:

How the cuts arrived

The first moves came on Sunday 11th Oct, when Astron East Devonport and United Devonport trimmed 2 to 4 cents. Then on Tuesday 13th Oct, in the 39 minutes from 10:56am, four servos cut 6 to 7 cents: the unmanned Shell TAS Petroleum sites on River Road in Wivenhoe and in East Devonport, United Burnie and Astron East Devonport. That afternoon Ampol Mood Food Burnie cut 7 cents, and Shell Reddy Express Devonport and OTR Formby Road cut 4.

On Wednesday, Astron East Devonport went to 231.9. On Thursday, EG Ampol Burnie cut 8 cents to 243.9, and OTR, Reddy Express and United in Devonport all reached 243.9 within 35 minutes. On Monday 19th Oct the cheaper sites edged back up 1 to 3 cents, to today's 244.9 and 234.9.

Ulverstone went the other way

On the same Tuesday morning that United Burnie cut 6 cents, United Ulverstone lifted 8 cents to 251.9, then added another 5 cents on 16th Oct to reach 256.9. On 10th Oct it had been the cheapest servo in town at 243.9, 13 cents under the next cheapest. Today it sits 12 cents above United Devonport.

Ampol Ulverstone, BP Ulverstone, EG Ampol Ulverstone, Shell Fourways, Shell Turners Beach and United Forth all list 259.9. Astron West Ulverstone, at 258.9, is the only one of the eight below its 10th Oct price, and only by 1 cent. EG Ampol charges 244.9 in Burnie and 259.9 in Ulverstone, a 15 cent gap under the same sign about 26 kilometres apart.

Ulverstone has no unmanned TAS Petroleum site, the kind that moved first in both Burnie and East Devonport on 13th Oct. Its United site moved the opposite way to United Burnie and United Devonport, so the brand on the sign was not what decided it. My read is that when no servo in town cuts first, the others have no reason to follow.

Devonport runs two price levels

Five Devonport servos are between 234.9 and 244.9. The other nine, seven of them Ampol or BP sites, are between 249.9 and 259.9. Ampol East Devonport lists 256.9, while Astron East Devonport, 111 metres away, lists 234.9. On a 50 litre tank, that 22 cent gap is worth $11.

OTR has narrowed its gap

Petrolmate's 10th Oct analysis found OTR holding a 16 cent gap between OTR Cooee at 239.9 and OTR Kings Meadows in Launceston at 255.9. Today Cooee and OTR Devonport Formby Road are both on 244.9 and Kings Meadows is on 250.9. That gap is down to 6 cents, and Cooee and Devonport, which were 10 cents apart on 10th Oct, are now level. All three sites changed price in the same minute, at 5:21pm on 19th Oct.

E10, diesel and the wider state

Along this coast only United Burnie lists E10, at 238.9, 5 cents under its unleaded, so compare E10 prices if your car can use it. Regular diesel prices follow a milder version of the same pattern: 274.9 at United Burnie and TAS Petroleum River Road and 275.9 at Astron East Devonport, against 279.9 to 289.9 at the four Ulverstone servos that list it. Greater Hobart's unleaded median is 249.9 and Launceston's is 251.4.

What this means for your next fill

Ulverstone motorists heading east save 15 cents a litre at Devonport's 244.9 sites, or 25 cents at Astron East Devonport. That is $7.50 to $12.50 on a 50 litre tank. Heading west, Burnie's lowest boards are 243.9 to 244.9. In Devonport, with its two price levels, check the board before you pull in.

The savings calculator will work it out for your own tank, and you can check live unleaded petrol prices before you set off.

The numbers are clear: until one Ulverstone servo moves first, a short drive in either direction is worth 15 cents a litre.
