Seaford Servos Cut Unleaded to 224.5 While Christies Beach Holds at 238.9 Five Kilometres North
Two groups of servos in Adelaide's south sit a short drive from each other, yet their unleaded prices are now 14 cents apart. As of 11:30am ACDT on 21st Oct 2026, five servos in Seaford, Seaford Meadows and Huntfield Heights were selling unleaded between 224.0 and 224.9. About five kilometres north, the seven servos around Christies Beach and Noarlunga Centre were on 238.9 or 239.4. So why has one area cut 9 cents in nine days while the other has barely moved? Let me explain.
Here's what happened, step by step
At midday on Monday 12th Oct, six of the eight Seaford area servos were on 233.5 to 234.5, with the two OTR sites on 239.9. Over the next nine days they came down in small steps, usually matching each other within hours.
Tuesday 20th Oct shows how it works. X Convenience Seaford cut to 225.5 at 5:13pm. United Old Noarlunga matched at 5:30pm, and both Leroy's sites, at Hackham and McLaren Vale, went to 224.9 at 5:48pm and 5:49pm. EG Ampol Seaford followed at 6:17pm and Ampol Foodary Seaford Meadows at 7:47pm. By 9:30am on Wednesday, Liberty Seaford and X Convenience Seaford were on 224.5, EG Ampol Seaford was on 224.9 and Ampol Foodary Seaford Meadows was on 224.0. The OTR sites in Seaford and Old Noarlunga cut more slowly and now sit at 229.9.
Christies Beach has been much quieter. The three OTR sites there, plus Caltex Noarlunga, the X Convenience on Dyson Road, EG Ampol Noarlunga Centre and Ampol Foodary Noarlunga Downs, all cut 2 or 3 cents on Thursday 15th Oct. None of them has changed its unleaded price since.
Think of it this way
Petrol is about as close to an identical product as anything you can buy. Ampol Foodary Seaford Meadows and X Convenience Seaford are 370 metres apart, close enough that plenty of drivers pass both price boards on the same trip. If one is 2 cents cheaper, the other starts losing sales that afternoon, which is why the Seaford matches came within hours. When customers can compare prices instantly, no seller can stay above its neighbours for long.
Five kilometres changes that. A motorist in Christies Beach would have to drive out of their way to reach Seaford, and most people simply fill up wherever is convenient. The key factor here is what economists call search and travel costs. When checking prices or driving further takes time and effort, a servo can hold a higher price without losing many customers.
The same brands, two prices
The clearest evidence comes from comparing a brand with itself:
* Ampol Foodary: 224.0 at Seaford Meadows, 238.9 at Noarlunga Downs, 4.1 km apart: 14.9 cents
* X Convenience: 224.5 in Seaford, 238.9 on Dyson Road, 5.0 km apart: 14.4 cents
* EG Ampol: 224.9 in Seaford, 238.9 at Noarlunga Centre, 5.6 km apart: 14.0 cents
* OTR: 229.9 in Seaford, 239.4 at OTR Christies Beach on Beach Road, 5.5 km apart: 9.5 cents
Getting fuel to two sites five kilometres apart costs about the same, so costs can't explain a 14 cent gap. Local competition can.
The gap has also grown. At midday on 12th Oct, the median across the eight Seaford area servos was 233.9 and the median across the seven Christies Beach servos was 241.4, a difference of 7.5 cents. Today it is 224.9 against 238.9, a difference of 14.0 cents.
Is the drive worth it?
On a 50 litre tank, a 14 cent gap is worth $7.00. A 10 kilometre return trip uses about a litre in a typical car, roughly $2.25 at today's prices, so you would still come out close to $5 ahead. If Seaford is already on your way to work or the shops, you keep the whole $7. Our savings calculator runs the same sum for your own car. For E10 drivers, Liberty Seaford is the only servo in either group that lists it, at 219.5.
What to watch next
Price wars end when someone stops cutting. United Old Noarlunga went to 224.5 at 7:25am today, then moved back up to 227.9 at 8:55am. One move doesn't make a trend, but this is often how a floor first shows up.
For context, the Adelaide median across 277 servos with a current price is 234.4, down from 239.9 on 13th Oct. That puts Seaford about 10 cents under the city and Christies Beach about 5 cents above it. Our 8th Oct look at Adelaide's missing reset covers the wholesale side of that picture.
Prices here come from South Australia's official fuel price reporting scheme. Competition at the pump works street by street, so it pays to compare unleaded petrol prices across the few kilometres you already drive.
