Queensland Motorists Cop the Highest Mainland Fuel Prices While Victoria Goes Through the Wringer
Right, so here's the thing. If you're filling up in Queensland at the moment, you're probably wondering why your wallet feels a bit lighter than usual. And fair dinkum, there's a good reason for it.
Queensland is sitting on the highest average fuel prices on the mainland right now. We're talking about 215.3 cents per litre for diesel as the state average, which is a solid 25 to 30 cents more than what motorists are paying in South Australia, Western Australia, or Victoria. That's not pocket change when you're filling up the work ute or the family SUV.
The Queensland Situation
Now, you'd be mad not to shop around if you're in Queensland. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive servos is sitting at 64 cents per litre. That means some servos are doing the right thing at around 173.5 cents, while others are taking the mickey at 237.9 cents. On a 60 litre tank, that's the difference between paying $104 and paying $142. That's nearly forty bucks!
For Brisbane drivers, it's worth keeping an eye on the outer suburbs. The prices tend to be sharper once you get out of the CBD, and a quick check before you head out can save you enough for a decent feed.
Meanwhile in Victoria
Now here's where it gets interesting. Victoria is going through one of those price cycles that makes you want to pull your hair out. The northern suburbs have copped some serious increases over the past day or two.
Tarneit has seen unleaded petrol jump by a whopping 46.5 cents per litre. One minute you're paying 161.9 cents, next thing you know it's 208.4 cents. That's proper painful.
Broadmeadows isn't far behind with a 25.8 cent increase on standard unleaded, going from 179.9 cents up to 205.7 cents. Craigieburn copped a 23.5 cent rise too, now sitting at 211.4 cents.
But here's the good news if you're in Victoria and willing to do a bit of driving. Regional areas like Hamilton have actually dropped their prices by 27.5 cents, now showing 172.5 cents for regular unleaded. Coburg has seen Premium 98 come down by 28 cents as well.
Where to Find the Best Deals
If you're in Melbourne, your best bet right now is to head west or south rather than north. The northern corridor is right in the thick of the price cycle spike, but places like Deer Park are showing some relief on premium fuels with a 24.7 cent drop.
For the tradies and anyone running diesel, Moe in Gippsland is showing 166.9 cents which is about as good as it gets anywhere in the country. Epsom near Bendigo is also competitive at 169.1 cents.
Over in NSW, the western suburbs continue to deliver decent value. Smithfield has diesel at 168.5 cents, and Fairfield is showing 171.5 cents. Granville is worth a look too at 176.3 cents with barely any variation between servos.
The State by State Breakdown
Here's where things sit right now for diesel (and similar patterns apply to unleaded):
- South Australia: 187.1 cents average, 45.4 cent spread
- Western Australia: 189.3 cents average, 77.6 cent spread
- Victoria: 189.8 cents average, 83.1 cent spread
- NSW: 192.6 cents average, 103 cent spread
- Tasmania: 192.8 cents average, 28.4 cent spread
- Queensland: 215.3 cents average, 64.4 cent spread
- Northern Territory: 239.4 cents average, 231.1 cent spread
South Australia continues to offer the most stable pricing with the tightest spread in the country. If you're planning a road trip and want predictable fuel costs, that's worth knowing.
The Bottom Line
Look, end of the day, the message is the same as always. Check before you fill. If you're in Victoria's northern suburbs, hold off if you can because those prices will come back down in a few days when the cycle resets. If you're in Queensland and seeing prices over $2.10, there's a good chance a servo ten minutes down the road is twenty cents cheaper.
That's forty bucks a week if you're filling up twice. Can't argue with that.
