Dampier Peninsula Petrol Drops 42 Cents as Remote WA Finally Gets Some Price Relief
The number that caught my eye this morning is a remote one. Unleaded petrol on the Dampier Peninsula has fallen 42.4 cents to an average of 267.6 cents per litre as of 13th Jul 2026 8:04am AEST. Diesel in the same corner of the Kimberley did something even more striking, dropping 99.5 cents from 358.0 to 258.5. For a part of Western Australia where fuel prices usually move in only one direction, that is a substantial shift, and it deserves a closer look.
The Kimberley correction
The Dampier Peninsula, the remote stretch of country north of Broome, recorded these falls across nine stations reporting unleaded and eight reporting diesel. Pricing in communities this remote follows freight schedules and delivery timing rather than the metro discount cycle. When fresh supply arrives, the board prices can reset sharply, and that appears to be what happened here.
Some perspective helps, though. Even after a fall of 42.4 cents, unleaded at 267.6 still carries a premium of roughly 90 cents over what Perth drivers pay, and nobody up north is calling this cheap fuel. But the direction matters. A drop of nearly a dollar a litre on diesel is genuine money for station owners, tour operators and anyone running a LandCruiser between communities. The statewide number that needs a caveat
On paper, the WA statewide diesel average fell from 259.4 yesterday to 201.8 today, a decline of 57.6 cents or around 22 percent overnight. Before anyone gets excited, look at the sample sizes. Yesterday's figure was built from just 21 stations reporting, while today's covers 1,221. Sunday's small sample leaned heavily toward expensive remote sites, which inflated the average. Today the full FuelWatch picture is back, and the real statewide average is simply sitting where it has been for weeks, in the low 200s.
Statistically speaking, a dramatic overnight swing in an average only means something if the underlying sample is consistent. The Dampier Peninsula falls are real, station by station. The 22 percent statewide plunge is a statistical mirage.
Where Perth's cheapest diesel actually is
For Perth drivers, the more useful numbers are at suburb level, and several pockets of the metro area are holding well below the state average. Wanneroo has diesel from 170.5 cents, the cheapest board price in the metro data today, though its eight stations span a 21.4 cent range, so choosing carefully matters. Kwinana Beach starts at 172.3 across six stations, Dianella at 172.9, Yangebup at 173.9 and Forrestfield at 174.7. Beckenham is the statistical curiosity of the day: all three of its stations are sitting on exactly 177.3, a spread of zero.
Across the whole state, diesel runs from 164.7 to 390.0 cents. That spread of 225.3 cents is wider than any state except the Northern Territory, and to me it is the clearest argument in the dataset for checking diesel prices before you commit to a fill.
The southwest holds steady
Regional WA outside the Kimberley looks stable. East Bunbury has diesel from 177.5, West Busselton from 179.5, and Pinjarra from 172.7. Pinjarra comes with its own catch, a 37.2 cent spread between its cheapest and dearest pumps, so the wrong choice there costs real money.
How WA compares nationally
At 201.8, WA's diesel average still sits above Victoria at 191.2, NSW at 195.6 and Queensland at 195.9, while the Northern Territory remains the national outlier at 257.2.
What the numbers mean for your next fill
Four things follow from the data.
* The Dampier Peninsula falls are genuine and substantial: 42.4 cents off unleaded and 99.5 cents off diesel.
* The apparent 22 percent statewide diesel drop is a sampling artefact, not a market move.
* Perth diesel below 175 cents is available right now in Wanneroo, Kwinana Beach, Dianella, Yangebup and Forrestfield.
* Wide suburb spreads, up to 37 cents in Pinjarra, reward drivers who compare before filling.
The numbers are clear: whether you are in the Kimberley or the metro area, knowing which pump to pick matters far more this week than which day you fill up.
