Barmera Holds Diesel at 222 While South Australia Averages 241
According to pricing data collected at 2:12pm AEST on Sunday 2nd Aug 2026, some of the cheapest diesel in the country is not being sold in an Adelaide suburb. It is being sold in the Riverland, on the shores of Lake Bonney, at a handful of sites that have barely moved all week.
Barmera is averaging 222.2 cents a litre across three reporting sites. The South Australia average sits at 241.1. That is a gap of 18.9 cents, and it runs against the usual assumption that regional motorists pay a premium for living a long way from a fuel terminal.
Breaking down the Riverland numbers
Barmera's three sites are quoting between 219.9 and 226.9 cents, a spread of 7 cents. A short drive east, Berri is running a wider book: cheapest at 219.9, dearest at 239.9, average 226.6. The floor in both towns is identical at 219.9, which is also the cheapest of any diesel prices recorded anywhere in South Australia today.
Freight distance is not the only thing setting these numbers. The Riverland sits on the Sturt Highway, one of the busier corridors between Adelaide and the eastern states, and horticulture across the region keeps diesel volumes high all year. A site moving that much fuel can price harder than its distance from the capital suggests, because turnover matters more to its economics than the cost of getting the load there.
Mount Gambier in the south east is doing much the same thing. Five sites there average 229.7, ranging from 223.9 to 238.9, another 11.4 cents under the state figure.
The state picture
South Australia's diesel average lifted from 239.4 to 241.1 over the past day, a modest increase of 1.7 cents across 370 reporting sites. That is enough to make it the dearest of the five large mainland states, though not by much. Queensland sits at 239.3, NSW at 239.8, Victoria at 240.6 and Western Australia at 241.0, so the margin over Queensland is under 2 cents. Only Tasmania at 242.7, the ACT at 244.0 and the Northern Territory at 277.9 sit above it.
The internal range is the figure I keep coming back to. South Australia's cheapest diesel today is 219.9 and its dearest is 325.0, a spread of 105.1 cents. That is the tightest of any mainland state, with Queensland spanning 131.0 cents, NSW 139.2, Victoria 147.0 and Western Australia 184.1. South Australia carries fewer remote outliers pulling the top of its range upward.
Adelaide's cycle is pulling premium 98 down
Blair Athol recorded the sharpest fall in the state, with premium 98 down 11.7 cents to 212.2 across five sites. That is a substantial movement, and it looks like the discount phase of the Adelaide price cycle rather than anything happening to wholesale costs.
It has also produced an odd result. Premium 98 in Blair Athol is now 28.9 cents cheaper than the state diesel average, which inverts the usual order of things. Motorists in a petrol car have a real window here, and the same cycle logic applies to standard unleaded, so it is worth checking unleaded petrol prices and the best time to fill up before the next hike lands. Diesel drivers get no cycle to work with. Location is the only lever they have.
What it means at the pump
