Mackay Petrol Falls 16 Cents as Queensland Becomes the Cheapest Mainland State for Diesel
The number that caught my eye this afternoon is 16.5 cents. That is how far standard unleaded across Mackay has fallen in a single reading, down to an average of 201.4 cents.
As of 2:00pm AEST on 3rd Aug 2026 it is the largest move in unleaded petrol prices recorded anywhere in the country today. Six servos are carrying that average, so this is a genuine local shift rather than one site discounting on its own.
Queensland now holds the cheapest mainland diesel
Queensland diesel averages 243.3 cents across 1,046 stations, down 2.4 cents overnight. That makes it the cheapest mainland market in the country, though only just. NSW sits at 243.4 and Victoria at 244.1, with Western Australia at 244.5, South Australia at 244.8 after lifting 1.2 cents, Tasmania at 246.7 and the ACT at 248.9. The Northern Territory is out on its own again at 279.2.
The consistency interests me more than the average does. Queensland's gap between its cheapest and dearest diesel pump is 131 cents, the narrowest of any mainland state. Victoria runs 147 cents, Western Australia 184.1 and the Territory 227.8. Statistically speaking, a Queensland motorist has a better chance of stumbling onto a fair price by accident than a driver almost anywhere else.
Regional servos are leading the discounting
Over the past 24 hours the falls have come from the regional centres rather than the southeast corner.
Pittsworth on the Darling Downs has taken diesel down 13.6 cents to 240.8 across five sites. Lockyer Valley Regional is close behind, down 13.4 cents to 238.7 across six stations. Out in the central west, Barcaldine has shed 12.2 cents to 250.7, which is the one that surprised me, because remote sites usually move last and move least.
Three regional markets going the same way on the same day is rarely coincidence. It normally means wholesale relief working through the supply chain, and it usually reaches metro sites a few days later.
Where the cheapest Queensland pumps are right now
If you are planning a fill this week, the diesel prices worth driving for sit north and west of Brisbane.
- Kingaroy averages 224.3 cents with a spread of just 2.4 cents across three sites, the tightest cluster in the state
- Beaudesert averages 229.1 cents, the cheapest option within easy reach of the southeast
- Monkland near Gympie averages 230.5 cents
- Thabeban at 232.3 and Bundaberg at 232.5 keep the Wide Bay competitive
- Maryborough holds the single cheapest diesel pump in the state at 218.9 cents, though its local average of 232.8 shows how much variation sits inside one town
Maryborough is the part I keep coming back to. A 21 cent gap between the cheapest and the dearest pump in one regional town comes to roughly 137 dollars against 152 dollars on a 65 litre fill, for the same fuel bought on the same afternoon.
Victoria moved the other way
While Queensland eased, northern Victoria climbed. Unleaded in Kerang lifted 11.8 cents to 203.5 across five servos, and premium 98 in the same town added 10.5 cents to 232.0. Diesel in Wodonga rose 10.3 cents to 249.6.
Two regional markets roughly 1,500 kilometres apart moved 28 cents in opposite directions on the same reading. Anyone watching only the national figure would have seen almost nothing happen today.
One for the performance car owners
Premium 98 in Mackay has come down 21.1 cents to 223.8, one of the few places in the country currently pricing 98 under 225. Ceduna in South Australia also eased 22.4 cents to 248.5, though that one is falling from a much higher base.
What the numbers mean for your next fill
Three things follow from the data.
- Mackay drivers should fill now rather than wait. Discount phases this deep usually hold a few days at most before retailers restore margin, and 16.5 cents on a 65 litre tank is a little over 10 dollars.
- Regional Queensland diesel buyers have a genuine window while the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley discounting works through. Kingaroy and Beaudesert are the two worth a detour.
- Motorists around Kerang and Wodonga are on the wrong side of the cycle this week, so buy what you need and no more until prices settle.
