Goodna Unleaded and E10 Lift 12 Cents in Lockstep as the Brisbane Cycle Turns
Sunday afternoon's price data uncovers a pattern in southeast Queensland that deserves a closer look. At Goodna, on the Ipswich corridor west of Brisbane, unleaded lifted 11.8 cents to 202.7 cents a litre as of 2:00pm AEST on Sunday 16th Aug 2026. E10 moved by exactly the same margin, up 11.8 cents to 200.7. Premium 98 was not far behind, adding 10.3 cents to reach 228.2.
Three fuels lifting by almost the same margin on the same weekend is not a wholesale cost story. When refining margins shift, they hit different grades in different ways and filter through over days or weeks. When everything on the price board jumps at once, that is the Brisbane price cycle turning, and servos across the corridor have restored their margins in one coordinated step.
The cycle has rotated in eight days
Regular readers will remember that on 8th Aug I examined Pimpama on the northern Gold Coast, where unleaded fell 14 cents to slip under 202. That was the discounting phase of the cycle doing its work. Eight days later the same mechanism is running in the opposite direction. Goodna's move suggests the restoration has begun in the western corridor, and these phases rarely stay contained to one suburb. Motorists across Queensland sitting under half a tank should treat this weekend as their cue.
The small consolation is the E10 gap. At 200.7 against unleaded's 202.7, E10 prices in Goodna are still running 2 cents under the standard grade, and for the roughly one in five Queensland motorists already using the ethanol blend, that takes a little of the sting out of the jump. It is also worth checking live unleaded petrol prices before assuming your regular servo has moved, because a restoration never reaches every site on the same day.
Where the value is still holding
Not every corner of the state has turned yet. At Yarraman, north of Toowoomba, all three servos reporting diesel sit on an identical 227.9, a perfectly flat board more than 20 cents under the state average. In Brisbane's south, Rocklea still shows diesel from 225.5, the cheapest reading in the metro area, though with a 20.4 cent spread across its six servos, picking the wrong driveway erases the advantage entirely.
The statewide diesel picture is less encouraging. Queensland's average lifted 4.4 cents to 248.4, and some regional centres moved harder. Chinchilla on the Warrego Highway added 13.5 cents to 253.0, a substantial move for a town on a major freight route, and every cent of it flows into the cost of moving goods through the Western Downs.
The border tells its own story
There is a sharper contrast in today's file, and it sits at the border. While Queensland diesel climbed, NSW diesel fell 15.1 cents in a single day to 246.8, the largest daily fall of any state and enough to carry NSW back under Queensland on the national diesel table. A fortnight ago I reported NSW diesel lifting 10 cents in a day to 239. It kept climbing well past 260 before this weekend's correction pulled a chunk of that back. Swings of that size in both directions inside two weeks say more about pricing behaviour than anything happening at the refinery gate.
Down in Victoria, the picture is calmer. Melbourne's Clayton South eased 7.4 cents on unleaded to 200.2, with premium 98 falling by the same margin to 227.2. The same lockstep mechanics that pushed Goodna up are pulling Clayton South down, just at a different point in each city's cycle.
What motorists should do with this
The lesson from Goodna is timing. The gap between filling at the bottom of the cycle and the top is now routinely 10 to 14 cents a litre in southeast Queensland, which is roughly $8 on a 60 litre tank. The cycle will turn again, it always does. The choice is whether you fill before the restoration reaches your suburb or after it.
