Young E10 Spans 29 Cents Across One Town as Hilltops Servos Lift 16 Cents in a Fortnight

In Young, a country town of around 10,000 people, the cheapest and dearest E10 are 29.0 cents a litre apart. That number surprised me this morning.

As of 26th Sep 2026 8:00am AEST, Metro Fuel Young was listing E10 at 219.9 at its last report, while EG Ampol Young sat at 248.9. On a 50 litre tank, the difference is $14.50.

How the fortnight unfolded

The spread matters more because prices across the Hilltops have climbed steadily for two weeks. I tracked every Young servo selling E10 on a daily basis from 12th Sep to today.

Across the five sites, the E10 average in Young has moved from 218.5 to 234.5, a lift of 16.0 cents in a fortnight. Most of that came between 15th and 22nd Sep, when the town repriced in two or three steps. It has been quiet since Tuesday, and EG Ampol eased a cent this morning.

The servos that were already dearest lifted the most. The Young Roadhouse and EG Ampol both added 21 cents, while Shell and BP added 12, so the gap in town has widened rather than narrowed.

Unleaded follows the same pattern

Regular unleaded petrol prices look almost identical. Metro Fuel Young was at 225.9 and Shell Young at 229.9, while South West Fuel Young reads 250.9. That is a 25.0 cent spread for the same fuel in the same town.

South West Fuel is the notable mover. It sat at 229.9 on 12th Sep and has lifted 21 cents to 250.9, which puts it above every other unleaded price I can see in Young.

Harden has its own split

A short drive north east, the twin towns of Harden and Murrumburrah show a similar gap. Ultra Harden and Aus Petroleum Harden both list unleaded at 227.9, while the Caltex site in Murrumburrah is at 252.9. Again, 25 cents separates servos only a few minutes apart.

Both Harden independents have E10 at 223.9. That makes Harden the cheaper of the two towns on average for the ethanol blend, even though Metro Fuel in Young holds the single lowest price.

Down the road, Wallendbeen is at 227.9 for E10 and 229.9 for unleaded, matching Shell Young to the cent.

Is E10 worth it here?

The E10 discount varies more than you might expect:

• Metro Fuel Young: 6 cents under its own unleaded
• Ultra Harden and Aus Petroleum Harden: 4 cents under
• Shell Young, Young Roadhouse and Ampol Wallendbeen: just 2 cents under

E10 typically uses around 3 per cent more fuel, so a 2 cent discount on a price near 230 roughly breaks even. At 4 to 6 cents it starts to pay. What the numbers mean for Hilltops motorists

Statistically speaking, the independents are setting the low prices in this part of regional NSW. In both Young and Harden the cheapest servo is an independent, and the dearest carries a major brand or sits on a highway corner.

So compare servos within the town rather than picking by brand. A 29 cent E10 gap inside Young is far larger than any fortnightly movement.

If you are passing through Harden, the detour is worth it. Both independents there beat most of Young on unleaded.

Don't assume the roadhouse is cheapest, either. The Young Roadhouse lifted 21 cents in two weeks, faster than the town average.
