Fairfield Diesel Averages 268.5 as Western Sydney Sits 18 Cents Under the NSW Average

Diesel across New South Wales averaged 286.7 cents a litre at 2:01pm AEST on 29th Sep 2026, measured across 1,140 servos. In Fairfield, the four servos Petrolmate tracks averaged 268.5. That is 18.2 cents under the state figure, and it puts Fairfield level with Granville as the cheapest NSW suburb for diesel in today's data.

On a 60 litre tank the gap is about $10.90. For a 4WD or work ute with an 80 litre tank it is closer to $14.50, and that is every fill.

The Western Sydney diesel belt

Fairfield has company. Several neighbouring suburbs also sit well under the state average:

* Fairfield: 4 servos, cheapest 265.5, average 268.5, dearest 272.9

* Granville: 3 servos, all at 268.5

* Smithfield: 4 servos, cheapest 265.5, average 271.7, dearest 284.9

* Ingleburn: 5 servos, cheapest 269.5, average 275.3, dearest 282.9

* Yagoona: 5 servos, cheapest 269.9, average 278.1, dearest 286.9

* Guildford: 3 servos, cheapest 268.5, average 278.3, dearest 286.9

Prices are tight in the middle of this belt and looser at the edges. Fairfield's cheapest and dearest are just 7.4 cents apart, and all three Granville servos share one price. Smithfield, right next door to Fairfield, has a 19.4 cent spread, so there the servo you pick matters more than the suburb you are in.

Guildford is similar. Its cheapest diesel matches Granville at 268.5, but its average is almost 10 cents higher because the dearest servo is at 286.9. Pull into the wrong forecourt and you pay about the state average, with cheaper diesel a few streets away.

Regional NSW has bigger spreads and similar floors

Outside Sydney, the cheapest prices are close to the metro ones. The gaps inside each town are larger.

* Bomaderry on the South Coast has the lowest single diesel price among these NSW suburbs at 259.9. Its dearest servo is 285.9, a 26.0 cent spread across only four servos.

* Orange ranges from 267.5 to 290.9. Its 9 servos are the most of any suburb in this group, and they sit 23.4 cents apart.

* Wauchope runs from 269.5 to 287.9 across five servos, an 18.4 cent spread.

* Mayfield in Newcastle averages 278.4, with its cheapest servo at 274.5.

* Port Kembla is steadier, with 7.0 cents between cheapest (272.9) and dearest (279.9).

Bomaderry is the one that caught my eye. Its cheapest servo is 8.6 cents below Fairfield's average, but its dearest is 17.4 cents above it. On an 80 litre tank, choosing the dearest over the cheapest in Bomaderry costs $20.80. That is a lot of money for one town.

Why the state average looks high

The statewide range runs from 248.3 to 359.9 cents, a spread of 111.6 cents. The top end comes from remote and highway servos, where freight costs and low volumes keep prices up, and those outliers drag the average higher. Most suburban motorists who shop around are paying well under 286.7.

For comparison, the ACT averaged 296.1 across 19 diesel servos today. That is 9.4 cents above the NSW figure and 27.6 cents above Fairfield.

What the numbers mean for diesel drivers

In Smithfield, Guildford, Yagoona, Orange and Bomaderry, the cheapest and dearest servos are 17 to 26 cents apart. If you fill up in one of those, check current diesel prices before you leave. It takes less time than the detour.

Fairfield, Granville and Port Kembla are the opposite. With spreads of 7.4 cents or less, almost any servo there is close to the local best, so you can fill on the go.

The numbers are clear: in Fairfield and Granville almost any servo will do, but in Bomaderry or Orange the wrong forecourt can cost you more than 20 cents a litre.
