Canberra Unleaded Climbs 8 Cents to 247.9 as Three Woden Servos Hold at 241.9

Nine days ago, 36 of the 54 public servos in Canberra were selling unleaded at exactly 239.9 cents a litre. That price lasted four days. Prices lodged with FuelCheck at 12:00pm AEDT on Wednesday 14th Oct 2026 put the median Canberra servo at 247.9, with 29 of the 54 sitting on exactly that figure and 52 dearer than they were at noon on Monday 5th Oct.

Two steps, led by one brand

The climb came in two steps. The Shell Reddy Express network moved first and as a block, just as it did on the way down.

All 15 Shell Reddy Express sites in the ACT listed 239.9 at every noon reading from Friday 2nd Oct to Monday 5th Oct. By noon on Tuesday 6th Oct all 15 were at 245.9, and by noon on Thursday 8th Oct all 15 were at 247.9. None has changed since.

EG Ampol in Dickson, Tuggeranong, Wanniassa and at the airport took the same two steps on the same days, as did 7 Eleven in Holt, Spence and Wanniassa and both Ampol Foodary sites in Weston. Four Ampol Foodary sites went further on Tuesday 13th Oct, to 249.9 in Calwell, Kaleen, Nicholls and Holt.

Only two ACT servos are not dearer than on 5th Oct: Ampol on Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick, at 249.9, and BP on Gold Creek Road in Nicholls, at 251.9. Neither joined the cut in the first place.

At noon on 29th Sep, before the cut, the Canberra median was 247.3. Today it is 247.9, so the cut has been fully reversed.

Woden holds out

The exception is in the Woden Valley. 7 Eleven Mawson and EG Ampol Mawson, about 170 metres apart on Mawson Place, and 7 Eleven Phillip on Parramatta Street held at 239.9 until Monday 12th Oct, a full week after most of the city moved. All three lifted 2 cents on Tuesday to 241.9, where they sit today.

That leaves a 6 cent gap inside Phillip. Shell Reddy Express Phillip on Melrose Drive is at 247.9, 800 metres from the 7 Eleven. On a 50 litre tank that is $3.

The same brands charge quite different prices across the city. 7 Eleven sites range from 241.9 in Mawson to 248.9 in Giralang. EG Ampol runs from 241.9 at Mawson and the Canberra Gateway site in Lyneham to 249.9 in Conder. United in Kambah is also at 241.9.

The cheapest public unleaded petrol prices in the territory are at Metro Petroleum on Barrier Street in Fyshwick, at 239.9. It moved up from 237.9 on Sunday 11th Oct. Ampol on Canberra Avenue, about 600 metres away, is 10 cents higher.

The Queanbeyan gap widens again

On 5th Oct the gap to Queanbeyan had narrowed to 4 cents. It has since reopened. Across 11 servos in Queanbeyan, Crestwood, Karabar and Jerrabomberra, the median went from 235.9 to 240.9, a rise of 5 cents against Canberra's 8. The gap is now 7 cents.

Measured from 29th Sep, though, the border gap is narrower than it was. Queanbeyan has climbed 7 cents in a straight line from 233.9 since then, while Canberra went down and back up. A fortnight ago the gap was more than 13 cents, so today's 7 cents is about half of that.

The three cheapest over the border, Mobil in Crestwood, Metro Petroleum in Queanbeyan West and Pearl Energy Queanbeyan, moved from 229.9 to 233.9 last weekend. That still leaves them 14 cents under the Canberra median, or $7 a tank.

The cleanest comparison is one brand on both sides of the border. Shell Reddy Express in Queanbeyan East is at 240.9, 7 cents under all 15 of its ACT counterparts. On 5th Oct the same gap was 4 cents.

E10 and the wider picture

E10 prices sit exactly 2 cents under unleaded at 33 of the 35 Canberra servos that list both. Over the border the spread is wider. Mobil in Crestwood and Pearl Energy in Queanbeyan were still listing E10 at 225.9 at noon today, 8 cents under their own unleaded and 20 cents under Shell Reddy Express E10 in Deakin and Curtin.

The rise comes as the Legislative Assembly's economics committee examines why Canberra pays more than other capitals. The motion that set up the inquiry asks for interim findings by 3rd Dec.

For Canberra motorists, the data points to two options this week: the Woden sites at 241.9 or, for anyone already passing through, the three cheapest Queanbeyan servos at 233.9. Whether the three Woden servos follow the rest of the city to 247.9 is the thing to watch on our price trends page.
