Nine Alice Springs Servos Sell Unleaded at 266.9, 18 Cents Above Darwin
Right, so if you're filling up in Alice Springs this weekend, don't burn fuel hunting for a bargain. Leave out the two fuel depots and Alice has 12 servos listing unleaded, and nine of them are asking exactly 266.9.
These are the prices lodged with the Northern Territory's official fuel price reporting scheme as at 12:30pm AEDT on 17th Oct 2026.
The nine on 266.9 are EG Ampol on Railway Terrace, the BP Alice Springs Truckstop on the North Stuart Highway, BP Gap Road, BP Sadadeen, Shell Reddy Express Gap Rd, Shell Reddy Express Mt Gillen, the Shell Reddy Express Truck Stop, Ampol Larapinta and United Heavitree Gap. Same number on every board.
The other three are all dearer. S24 Alice City on Railway Terrace is on 267.9, the Mogas pumps at the airport are on 268.9, and Ampol Teppa Hill has been on 272.9 since the 12th. Teppa Hill is about 360 metres up the North Stuart Highway from the BP Truckstop, so you'd be paying 6 cents a litre more for nothing. On a 60 litre tank that's $3.60, which is a coffee.
The only listing under 266.9 is the Refuel depot on Ghan Road at 260.8. It's a depot rather than your usual servo, though, so check it suits you first.
How Alice got to 266.9
Here's the thing, right. Alice didn't get here in one go. The town median was 224.9 in mid August and sat between 231.9 and 233.9 into early September. From the 10th it went up almost every day until it hit 261.9 on the 23rd, which is 28 cents in under a fortnight.
It eased a cent to 260.9 on the 28th and held there for a week. Then it went up in two 3 cent steps. The three Shell Reddy Express sites went to 263.9 on 6 Oct and the three BPs followed on the 7th. Shell went to 266.9 on the 10th, BP matched on the 12th, and EG Ampol, United and Ampol Larapinta were all there by the 13th.
Fair dinkum, the three BPs have had the same price as each other every day since mid August, and so have Shell's Gap Rd and Mt Gillen sites. With the brands moving together like that, there's not much room to shop around.
How Alice compares with the Top End
Darwin isn't cheap either. The median across 45 servos in Darwin and Palmerston is 248.9 and the cheapest is on 239.5, which leaves Alice 18 cents above the Darwin median. That's about $10.80 on a 60 litre fill, or a couple of beers at the pub.
In Katherine, United Katherine, United Katherine South and Liberty Katherine are all on 243.9, so Alice is paying 23 cents more.
The gap to Darwin hasn't really grown, though. Alice was 16 cents over the Darwin median in mid August, 18 cents on 8 Sep, 15 cents on 23 Sep and 5 Oct, and it's 18 cents now. Since mid August the Darwin median has gone up 40 cents, Katherine's about 39 and Alice's 42. So motorists right across the Northern Territory have copped much the same rise. Alice just started higher, and that's usually put down to distance and a small market.
Heading south through Tennant Creek?
If you're coming down the Stuart Highway, the four servos in Tennant Creek are 20.9 cents apart from cheapest to dearest. Independent Red Shop on Peko Road is on 259.0, Tennant Creek Service Station on 265.0, Lone Star on 275.9 and BP Complex Tennant Creek on 279.9.
Red Shop beats every listing in Alice, and it's 7.9 cents under the 266.9 most of the town is charging. If you've got room in the tank, you'd be mad not to top up there before the run of about 500 kilometres south. That's $4.74 back on 60 litres, and you can put your own numbers into our savings calculator.
Diesel and E10 in Alice
If you're on diesel, EG Ampol, S24 and both Ampols only list premium diesel. Regular diesel at the other main servos runs from 287.5 to 290.9, and the lowest regular listing is 284.5 at the Alice Springs OPT on Dowdy Court in Ciccone. Check the latest diesel prices before you fill.
There's no E10 listed anywhere in Alice, so it's unleaded petrol or nothing.
What I'd do
At most Alice servos the price is the price right now, so the saving comes from skipping the dearer three, Teppa Hill especially, and from filling at Red Shop if you're coming through Tennant Creek. Keep an eye on our price trends page too, because the last two moves in Alice both came 3 cents at a time.
Look, end of the day, that's $3.60 back on a tank for driving past Teppa Hill, and $4.74 for stopping at Red Shop on the way down. Can't argue with that.
