Howrah Holds Unleaded at 239.9 While Glenorchy Pays 10 Cents More at the Same Brands
Right, so here's one for Hobart's northern suburbs, if you fill up close to home. The same Shell, EG Ampol and Ampol Foodary signs are charging 10 cents a litre more for unleaded in Glenorchy than they are across the Derwent in Howrah.
These prices come from Tasmania's official government fuel price scheme, as at 8:30am AEDT on Saturday 24th Oct 2026.
Two sides of the river
Take the 10 servos on the eastern shore, from Lindisfarne and Risdon Vale down through Bellerive and Howrah. Their middle price for unleaded is 239.9. Across the 15 servos in the northern suburbs, from New Town through Moonah and Glenorchy to Claremont, it's 249.9.
Here's the thing, right. The gap wasn't always this wide. At the peak on 13 October, the northern suburbs were on 253.9 and the eastern shore on 249.9, just 4 cents apart. Since then the eastern shore has come down 10 cents and the north only 4.
Same sign, different price
Shell Reddy Express Howrah is on 239.9 and Shell Reddy Express Glenorchy is on 249.9. Fair dinkum, Shell's Hobart sites run on fixed tiers. Howrah, Sandy Bay and the Elizabeth Street site in the city are on 239.9, while Moonah, Glenorchy, Blackmans Bay and Sorell are on 249.9. The gap between the two groups has been exactly 10 cents since 15 October. All of them went up a cent together on 19 October and came back down a cent on 22 October.
EG Ampol and Ampol Foodary split the same way:
- EG Ampol Howrah 239.9, EG Ampol Glenorchy 249.9, EG Ampol Claremont 254.9
- Ampol Foodary Eastlands in Bellerive 239.9, Ampol Foodary Glenorchy 249.9
So if you stick with Shell stations or EG Ampol, the side of the river you fill up on counts for more than the brand on the sign.
Glenorchy's cut lasted two days
Northern suburbs motorists got a short break this week. On Wednesday 21 October, EG Ampol Glenorchy cut to 244.9 and Ampol Foodary Glenorchy to 243.9. EG Ampol Claremont went from 257.9 to 249.9, and United Lutana dropped 6 cents to 243.9. For a couple of days the gap to the eastern shore shrank to about 6 cents.
By Friday arvo it was gone. Ampol Foodary Glenorchy and EG Ampol Glenorchy were back on 249.9, EG Ampol Claremont had gone to 254.9 and United Lutana to 247.9. Howrah stayed within a cent of 239.9 the whole week.
Who's keeping the east cheap
The eastern shore has three independents within a few kilometres of each other. Astron Wentworth on Clarence Street is on 239.5, Vibe Glebe Hill is on 238.5 and the unmanned U Go Lindisfarne is on 237.9. All three have spent the week between 233.9 and 239.7, and the majors nearby are within a couple of cents of them.
Up the northern end, the cheap independent is TAS Petroleum Moonah, and the majors in Glenorchy and Claremont sit 11 to 17 cents above it. We can't see how anyone sets their prices, but that's a much wider gap than you'll find in Howrah.
The pick of the north
If you live in Glenorchy, you'd be mad to drive across the bridge just for fuel, because there's a cheaper option on your side. TAS Petroleum Moonah at 138 Main Road is an unmanned site on 237.9. That's 12 cents under Shell Glenorchy and level with the cheapest servo on the eastern shore. Ampol Mood Food Moonah, further up Main Road at number 200, is on 242.9. If you're out that way anyway, those two are the go.
What it's worth
On a 60 litre tank, 10 cents a litre is six bucks. That's a coffee every fill, or a couple of schooners a month if you fill up weekly. Kingston and Blackmans Bay sit with the north on a middle price of 249.9, so the same goes south of the city.
Keep an eye on whether the northern suburbs cut again next week. Our price trends page will show it, and you can check unleaded petrol prices right across Tasmania or pull up the interactive fuel map before you head out.
Look, end of the day, that's six bucks back on a 60 litre tank for picking a 239.9 servo over a 249.9 one. Can't argue with that.
