Victoria Holds the Cheapest Mainland Diesel as Bendigo and Geelong Lead the State Lower

A comprehensive analysis of this week's fuel pricing data reveals that Victoria has quietly taken the title of cheapest mainland market for diesel, with a statewide average of 203.7 cents per litre as of 16th June 2026 2:12pm AEST. Breaking down the numbers, Victoria now sits below every other state on the eastern seaboard and beyond, easing a further 2.7 cents over the past day while several neighbouring markets held firm or edged higher.

Drilling down into the specifics, the regional comparison tells a clear story. Across 1,070 reporting stations, Victoria's 203.7 cent diesel average undercuts New South Wales at 205.5 cents, Queensland at 207.0 cents, South Australia at 207.7 cents and Western Australia at 209.0 cents. Tasmania remains the dearest southern market at 209.2 cents, while the Northern Territory continues to stand apart at 233.8 cents, a full 30 cents above the Victorian benchmark. For motorists running utes, vans and SUVs, the data paints a clear picture of where the value sits this week.

Bendigo leads the regional charge

The sharpest pricing in the state is not in the metropolitan grid but in the regional centres. Bendigo is leading Victoria lower with a four station diesel average of 184.0 cents, and the cheapest bowser there is reading 182.5 cents. Just to the north, the satellite suburb of Epsom is tracking closely at an average of 186.6 cents and a low of 182.3 cents across its three reporting sites.

The Latrobe Valley is also holding its ground. In Moe, three stations are averaging 185.3 cents with a tight spread of just 2.1 cents, a sign of genuine competition rather than a single outlier dragging the average down. Further west, Stawell motorists are seeing a five station average of 188.7 cents.

Our earlier reporting on the eastern states shows just how far Victoria has separated from the pack. When New South Wales diesel was climbing through the 208 cent mark a fortnight ago, regional Victoria was already settling into the mid 180s, and that gap has only widened this week.

Geelong tightens while Corio bucks the trend

Around Geelong the picture is more mixed. Grovedale is posting one of the most consistent results in the state, with three stations averaging 187.6 cents and a spread of less than one cent. Neighbouring Belmont is close behind at 188.4 cents.

That points to a competitive southern corridor, yet not every Geelong suburb is moving the same way. Corio stands out as a notable exception, where diesel lifted 8.6 cents to 199.0 cents across ten stations. Even within a single city, then, the suburb you choose can decide what you actually pay at the bowser.

Melbourne metro and the East Gippsland outlier

In the metropolitan market, Cheltenham is offering some of the steadier value in Melbourne, with a three station average of 190.1 cents. Out on the Princes Highway, Cann River in East Gippsland produced the single most eye catching figure in the dataset, with one site listing diesel at 150.0 cents against a local average of 188.3 cents. Industry factors such as wholesale delivery schedules and isolated highway competition can produce these wide spreads, and the 64.9 cent gap there underlines why a quick price check before a long haul pays off.

Not all of Victoria is easing. On the Mornington Peninsula, Langwarrin recorded a 9.5 cent fall to 208.0 cents for diesel, alongside softer premium grades, a sign the relief is broad but not uniform.

For motorists weighing up where to fill, the latest diesel prices confirm that the value this week is firmly weighted toward regional Victoria. The data clearly demonstrates that the cheapest mainland diesel in the country is currently sitting in Bendigo and the Geelong corridor, and for those willing to shop around, location and timing remain the two most important factors in fuel savings.
