Oberon Diesel Sits at 239.9 While Regional NSW Servos Undercut the Sydney Average
Right, so here's one you don't see every week. The country servos are beating the city ones at the moment, and not by a small margin either.
Had a squiz at the boards this arvo, 14th Sep 2026 at 2:04pm AEST. Diesel across New South Wales is averaging 262.8 cents a litre off 1,186 stations. Trouble is, that average hides a lot of movement, because the cheapest diesel in the state right now is 219.5 and the dearest is 339.9. A 120 cent spread inside the one state is fair dinkum ridiculous when you sit with it for a second.
Oberon leads the pack
Oberon, up in the Central Tablelands, has the best of it. Four servos, cheapest showing 239.9, suburb average 252.2. So there's a 20 cent spread in a town that size, which tells you the one doing the right thing is really doing the right thing and the other blokes are having a lend.
Twenty cents a litre on a 70 litre ute tank is 14 dollars. Most of a slab, for the sake of driving another two minutes down the road.
Wagga and the south west
Down in the Riverina, Wagga Wagga has five servos in the mix, cheapest at 243.5, suburb average 249.6, top of the range 261.9. About 18 cents between best and worst again. Run a work vehicle out that way and filling at the wrong one twice a week turns into real money by the end of the month.
Bomaderry on the South Coast is showing 243.9 at its cheapest against a 252.7 average, and Cessnock in the Hunter is on 244.5 with an average of 252.1. Both sit more than 18 cents under the state average at the cheap end. Worth knowing if you're heading down the coast or up through the wine country on the weekend.
Further out, Gunnedah is 249.5 at the cheapest with a tight 252.1 average, and Gloucester is 248.9 against 252.6. Neither of them is the sharpest number in the state, but they're consistent, and honestly I'd almost rather have that. You know what you're walking into before you pull up to the bowser, and you're not doing laps of the town hoping the next board is better.
The city isn't hopeless either
Before you decide you've got to drive three hours for a decent fill, Granville is about the best value going in Sydney right now. Three servos, cheapest 247.5, average 248.8, dearest 249.5. Two cents across the whole suburb. Everyone's matched everyone and nobody's taking the mick.
Fairfield is much the same, four servos, cheapest 249.5, average 251.0, top of the board 254.9. Western Sydney competition doing its job, same as we saw on the unleaded boards a couple of weeks back.
Here's the thing, right. Those Granville and Fairfield numbers are roughly 14 cents under the NSW average. You don't need to go bush to beat it. You just need to be somewhere three or four servos are staring at each other across the same roundabout.
What I'd do
In a suburb with a big spread like Oberon or Wagga, don't fill on the first board you see. Have a look at what else is within a couple of kilometres, because the cheap one and the dear one are usually sitting on the same road.
In a tight suburb like Granville or Fairfield, stop overthinking it. Two cents across a tank is about a dollar forty, so you'd burn more than that driving around looking for it. Fill wherever suits and get on with your day.

Look, end of the day, a 120 cent spread across one state means the servo you pick matters more than the week you fill. Two minutes of looking beats crossing your fingers. Can't argue with that.
