Gatton and Gympie Do the Right Thing as Queensland Diesel Firms Up

Right, so I've been watching the numbers up north this week and there's a story worth a look in Queensland, especially if you've got a diesel ute or you're carting a trailer around the southeast. As of 3rd Jul 2026 8:00am AEST, the state average for diesel prices has firmed up to 191.6 cents a litre, up about 4 cents on yesterday's 187.6. Not a huge move, but enough that you'll feel it if you're filling a big tank.

Here's the thing, right. When a state average ticks up like that, most people just cop it sweet and pay whatever's on the board. But the real story is never the average. It's the gap between the servos taking the mick and the ones doing the right thing by locals. And this week, the ones doing the right thing are out in the bush.

Head out to Gatton in the Lockyer Valley and you'll find diesel averaging 175.3 cents, with the cheapest pump sitting at 170.6. That's come down more than 10 cents on where it was, which is a fair dinkum drop while the rest of the state is going the other way. For a bloke filling an 80 litre tank, the difference between Gatton and the pricier metro servos is real money, we're talking eight or nine bucks a fill. That's a slab of your favourite, or a week of decent coffees, depending on how you like to spend it.

A bit further north, Gympie is singing the same tune. Diesel there is averaging around 173 cents, with pumps as low as 169.5. You'd be mad not to top up in Gympie if you're passing through on the Bruce, because those numbers are among the sharpest anywhere in the state right now. If you're out that way anyway, don't drive past a good price hoping for a better one down the road. It rarely works like that.

Not everyone's playing nice, mind you. Out in the Toowoomba region, diesel has jumped about 14 cents to sit near 196.6 cents. That's a notable move in one hit, and it puts Toowoomba well above the Gatton pumps just down the range. The difference between the top of the range and the valley floor is enough to make you plan your run. If you're heading down toward Brisbane anyway, you'd do well to hold off and fill up closer to the Lockyer.

For the Brisbane crowd, the metro pricing is tracking closer to the state average, so there's no bargain to be had in the city this week. If you regularly run out to the Darling Downs or the Sunshine Coast, keep a mental note of the Gatton and Gympie numbers and time your fills around those trips. A bit of planning beats paying city prices every time.

Zoom out and Queensland's actually sitting in the middle of the pack. Down in Victoria the diesel average is the cheapest on the mainland at 183.6 cents, so our southern mates are laughing a bit right now. At the other end, the Northern Territory is copping it worst with an average up around 259 cents once you get out to the remote spots, which just goes to show how much the distance from the depot drives what you pay at the bowser.

So Queensland's not the cheapest and not the dearest, but the spread within the state is what matters. When Gatton is under 176 and parts of the regions are pushing past 200, the servo you choose makes more difference than the state average ever will.

Look, diesel firming up a few cents isn't the end of the world, but it's a reminder to shop around rather than fill on autopilot. The Lockyer Valley servos in Gatton and the mob up in Gympie are doing the right thing this week, and the numbers back it up. If you want to squeeze a bit more out of your tank, it pays to know your best time to fill up and to check the map before you commit.

End of the day, a bit of planning means more cash in your pocket for the important stuff. Can't argue with that.
