Queensland Country Unleaded Slips as Goondiwindi Drops 12 Cents While Diesel Moves the Other Way
The number that caught my eye this morning is a regional one. While Queensland's statewide diesel average climbed 5.6 cents to 193.9 overnight, standard unleaded in Goondiwindi fell a full 12 cents to 162.9. As of Tuesday morning, 7th Jul 2026 8:14am AEST, regional Queensland petrol is moving almost in the opposite direction to diesel, and the towns leading the discounts are a long way from the capital.
The border town topping the charts
Goondiwindi sits on the New South Wales border, about four hours inland from Brisbane, and it is the standout mover in this morning's data. Standard unleaded across the town's five servos dropped from 174.9 to 162.9, a fall of 12 cents that puts the town below the cheapest readings in most metro suburbs right now. The discount is not limited to petrol either. Diesel across nine Goondiwindi sites eased 10.4 cents to an average of 182.5, so the town is currently cheaper than the state average for both major fuels.
To me that combination is the telling part. When one fuel falls on its own, it often reflects a single servo resetting its board. When unleaded petrol prices and diesel move down together across multiple sites, it usually means genuine local competition, and that is exactly what Goondiwindi is showing.
Roma and Kingaroy follow the same script
The interesting part is that Goondiwindi is not alone. Roma unleaded slipped 6.9 cents to 171.0, and diesel across eight local stations fell 8.2 cents to 183.7. Kingaroy unleaded came down 7 cents to 172.9 across five servos. Further out, Cloncurry in the north west recorded one of the larger diesel falls in the state, down 11.9 cents to 203.0.
Statistically speaking, motorists in these towns are now filling up for less than many drivers in southeast Queensland. That reverses the usual relationship, where regional fuel carries a premium over the metro market.
Diesel tells a different story statewide
Set against those local falls, the statewide diesel picture firmed. Queensland's average moved from 188.3 to 193.9 in the latest data, a rise of just under 3 percent across 1,022 reporting stations. The spread remains substantial, with the cheapest diesel in the state at 165.5 while remote sites run far higher.
The outback shows just how uneven the movement is. While Cloncurry eased, Hughenden went the other way, with diesel up 11.1 cents to 203.8. Two towns barely 250 kilometres apart on the same inland route are now moving in opposite directions, a reminder that state averages hide a lot of variation on the ground.
Closer to Brisbane, Rocklea diesel lifted 10.4 cents to an average of 179.9, though it remains one of the cheaper metro pockets, with the lowest local board still at 169.5. On the Gold Coast, Labrador is holding a cheapest diesel price of 173.5, and Hervey Bay sits steady at 179.5 across its reporting sites.
What the numbers mean for your next fill
If you live in or travel through the Darling Downs or western Queensland, this is an unusually good window. Goondiwindi at 162.9 and Roma at 171.0 are genuinely competitive numbers for standard unleaded, and history says prices like these do not sit still for long. Diesel drivers should not assume the statewide rise applies to their suburb either. Pockets like Rocklea and Labrador are still holding under 180 while other areas push past 200, and a quick look at price trends before a big fill shows whether your local market is on the way up or already easing.
The gap between neighbouring towns is also wide enough to reward a small detour. A 12 cent difference on a 60 litre tank is $7.20, and the spreads in this morning's data regularly exceed that.
The numbers are clear: regional Queensland is currently home to some of the best value unleaded in the country, and the motorists who check before they fill are the ones who will capture it.
