Sydney Diesel Rises 17 Cents but Granville Servos Are Still Holding at 228.5
Right, if you run a diesel ute or a wagon around Sydney, you might have copped a bit of a surprise at the pump this morning. As of 4th Aug 2026 2:00pm AEST, the average diesel prices across NSW sit at 247.1 cents a litre, up from 229.9 yesterday. That's a 17.2 cent move in a single day across the 1,146 stations we track, and on a 75 litre fill it works out to about thirteen bucks extra. Not exactly pocket change.
But here's the thing, right. That statewide average is hiding a fair bit. The headline number went up, and plenty of servos out my way have barely budged.
Granville is doing the right thing
Have a squiz at Granville. Three servos there, and every one of them is sitting on 228.5 for diesel. Not one on 228.5 with the other two off at 241.9. All three the same, so the spread between the cheapest and the dearest pump in the suburb today is nothing at all.
That puts Granville 18.6 cents under the state average. On a 75 litre tank that's close to fourteen dollars back in your pocket, which is a decent feed for two at the local. Fair dinkum, if you're anywhere near Parramatta Road at the moment, that's worth the detour.
The rest of the west is holding up too
It's not just Granville. Fairfield has four servos averaging 235.7, with four tenths of a cent between the cheapest and the dearest of them. Smithfield is much the same story, averaging 236.3 with the best pump at 234.5.
You'd be mad not to see what that's telling you. When three or four servos in the same suburb all land within a cent of each other, they're watching each other like hawks. Nobody wants to be the bloke charging 245 while the joint across the road sits on 235. Western Sydney drivers are the ones who come out in front of it.
Compare that to the state as a whole, where diesel today runs anywhere from 196.8 up to 336.0. That's a 139 cent gap. Same fuel, same day, same state.
Where the actual cheap stuff is
If you want the outright bargain in New South Wales today, you've got a long drive south ahead of you. Delegate, down in the Monaro near the Victorian border, has a pump sitting on 196.8. That's the cheapest diesel in the state and one of the few under two dollars anywhere in the country right now. Not much use to me on a Tuesday in Granville, but there it is.
Mind you, the Delegate average across its three servos is 221.4, and the dearest of them is 245.9. So one of them is genuinely cheap and the other two aren't. Worth checking before you pull in rather than assuming the whole town's a bargain.
Closer to home, Oberon is looking tidy on an average of 235.4 across four servos, with barely two cents between the best and the worst of them. If you're heading over the mountains anyway, that's a sensible spot to top up.
The national picture
Odd as it sounds, even after a 17.2 cent rise, NSW at 247.1 is now the cheapest state average for diesel in the country. Queensland is on 247.8, South Australia 248.7, Victoria 248.8, Tasmania 249.8, and the Northern Territory is out on its own at 280.9.
So everyone copped it. Western Australia added 18.4 cents overnight, which is a touch more than we got. This isn't a Sydney problem, it's a national one, and it reads like a wholesale move rather than servos taking the mick.
What I'd do about it
Diesel doesn't run on the same weekly cycle as unleaded, so sitting on your hands waiting for it to swing back down isn't much of a plan. What works is knowing your own radius. If you've got a Granville, a Fairfield or a Smithfield in your normal run, use it. Have a look at the price trends for your patch instead of guessing which servo is doing you over this week.
Look, end of the day, the state average went up 17 cents and there's not a thing you or I can do about that. But the difference between the cheap servo and the dear one within ten minutes of your place is still twenty odd cents a litre, and that bit's entirely up to you. Can't argue with that.
