Dunalley Has Tasmania's Cheapest Unleaded at 233.9 While Sorell Sits 16 Cents Higher

Shell Dunalley, on the Arthur Highway towards Port Arthur, is selling unleaded at 233.9, the lowest price lodged anywhere in Tasmania. Just 23 km away in Sorell, EG Ampol and United are both on 249.9. Sorell has cheaper fuel on both sides of it, and on Thursday a 5 cent lift across the state lasted about eight hours.

These figures use prices lodged with the Tasmanian FuelCheck scheme, as read at 6:05am AEDT on 1st Nov 2026. Tasmanian servos only lodge a new row when the price changes, so each price below is the latest on record for that site.

Sorell sits between two cheaper markets

On the run from Cambridge through Sorell to Dunalley, unleaded petrol prices start low, peak around Sorell and finish lower still. In Cambridge, Shell TAS Petroleum is on 235.9, with Ampol Bennetts and Ampol Mood Food on 238.9. Ampol Foodary at Midway Point is on 250.9, and EG Ampol and United in Sorell are on 249.9. Ampol at Primrose Sands is on 244.9, then Shell at Dunalley is on 233.9.

Sorell's other two servos, Ampol and Shell Reddy Express, last lodged 249.9 on 16 and 22 October.

The gap to Cambridge is getting wider. On 9 October all four Sorell servos were on 255.9 and Shell TAS Petroleum Cambridge was on 246.9, a 9.0 cent gap. Since then Cambridge has eased 11.0 cents and Sorell 6.0, which takes the gap to 14.0 cents, or $8.40 on a 60 litre tank. United Sorell has gone the other way lately, lifting three times from 245.7 on 12 October to 249.9 on 30 October.

A low price with a short history

Dunalley moves in large, infrequent steps. Shell Dunalley has lodged just five unleaded prices since late September: 243.9, 247.9, 257.9, 246.9 and 233.9. On 13 October it sat 2.0 cents above EG Ampol Sorell's 255.9. Two cuts then took it down 24.0 cents in a fortnight, while the median across Tasmania eased from 253.9 to 249.9.

Brand doesn't explain the gap. Shell Reddy Express Sorell last lodged 249.9, which is 16.0 cents above Shell Dunalley's 233.9, and the price data can't show why this one site cut so far. The current price dates from the evening of Tuesday 27 October, so it is worth checking before you make the trip.

The lift that lasted eight hours

Sorell also shows a statewide pattern. On Thursday 29 October, the same morning 113 Sydney Ampol servos lifted 5 cents, EG Ampol Sorell went from 249.9 to 254.9 at 6:17am. At 2:22pm it was back on 249.9.

Across EG Ampol, 13 of Tasmania's 14 sites lifted exactly 5 cents between 5:27am and 6:52am, and all 13 cut again by 4:02pm. Ten landed back on their starting price, while Burnie and Kingston kept 3.0 cents and Mowbray kept 2.0. Five Ampol Foodary sites and United Tasman in Bellerive followed much the same path that day.

A motorist filling up at EG Ampol Howrah on Thursday morning paid 244.9, and by late afternoon the same pump read 239.9, a difference of $3.00 on a 60 litre tank. Astron Wentworth and Vibe Glebe Hill in Howrah held 238.5 over the same day. The figures can't tell us why the rise was withdrawn. They do show that a morning lift can be gone by the afternoon, and I will be watching to see whether the next one sticks.

Diesel shows a wider gap

Regular diesel prices follow the same shape. United Sorell is on 288.9 and Shell TAS Petroleum Cambridge is on 271.9, a 17.0 cent gap, or $11.90 on a 70 litre tank. Shell Dunalley is on 275.9 and Ampol Lewisham is on 277.9. For E10 prices, United Sorell at 244.9 is the only listing along this run.

Where to fill

Heading from Sorell to Hobart, Ampol at Cambridge on 238.9 is 11.0 cents under Sorell, or $6.60 on a 60 litre tank. For anyone returning a hire car to Hobart Airport, BP Hobart Airport on 248.9 is about 440 metres from Ampol Mood Food on 238.9, a 10.0 cent gap. On the Tasman Peninsula, Shell Dunalley on 233.9 is the lowest in the state, but its price moves in big steps, so check it first. Before you drive, use the interactive fuel map and run your own tank through the savings calculator.

Armed with this information, Sorell motorists can save 14.0 cents a litre by filling up 9 km west at Cambridge, or 16.0 cents a litre at Dunalley, 23 km east.
