Caboolture Petrol Lifts Nearly 9 Cents and the Fact Diesel Moved Too Changes the Story
Unleaded across seven Caboolture servos averaged 210.8 cents at 8:00am AEST on Sunday 6th Sep 2026, up 8.9 cents from 201.9 the day before. On its own, a rise like that looks like the Brisbane cycle doing what it does. What caught my attention was the second figure on the same boards. Premium diesel at five Caboolture servos lifted 8.8 cents over the same 24 hours, from 247.9 to 256.7, and that second number tells you more than the first.
Two kinds of price rise
There are two main reasons a servo lifts its board overnight, and they leave different fingerprints.
The first is the price cycle. Think of it this way: retailers in Brisbane and the other big capitals spend weeks shaving a cent or two off the board to win customers, then reset to a higher price and start the slide again. The cycle is a petrol habit, though. Diesel buyers are more often tradies, fleets and transport operators who fill when the tank is empty rather than when the price looks good, so retailers rarely bother running the same discounting game on diesel. When a cycle resets, unleaded, E10 and the premium grades jump while diesel usually sits still.
The second reason is wholesale cost. Every litre a servo sells arrives from a terminal at a price set largely by international fuel markets and the exchange rate. When that price moves, it flows through to every grade at once, petrol and diesel alike.
That gives you the diagnostic I teach my students. If petrol lifts and diesel does not, you are probably looking at a cycle reset. If petrol and diesel lift together, at least part of the move is coming from further up the supply chain.
What the boards are saying this morning
Caboolture is the second case. Unleaded up 8.9, premium diesel up 8.8, inside the same day.
The wider picture points the same way. Across Queensland, the diesel average lifted 2.1 cents overnight to 256.3. In NSW, diesel rose 6.8 cents to 255.2 across 1,246 stations in a single day. Statewide averages are slow moving things. When one shifts by nearly 7 cents between one morning and the next, something has changed at the terminal gate rather than at the corner servo.
Melbourne's outer suburbs make a useful contrast. Hastings unleaded lifted 12.0 cents to 219.2 and St Albans lifted 9.8 to 215.4 on the same morning, yet the Victorian diesel average moved just 0.2 cents lower. Petrol up, diesel flat. That is the cycle fingerprint, and Caboolture is not showing it.
Where diesel is still cheap around Brisbane
If you drive a diesel north of the city, regular diesel has not moved as far as the premium grade. Three servos in neighbouring Deception Bay are posting regular diesel from 239.5 to 251.9 cents this morning, averaging 243.6, more than 12 cents under the state average.
South of the river, three Acacia Ridge servos sit between 238.5 and 239.9, and out in Toowoomba's Drayton three servos average 238.1 with only 2.2 cents between them. All of them are on our diesel prices page.
One caution. Premium diesel always costs more than the standard grade, so do not set Caboolture's 256.7 against Deception Bay's 243.6 and conclude one suburb is charging too much. It is the direction of the move that matters here, not the level.
What this means for your next fill
You might be wondering why the distinction matters if the price is up either way. It matters because the two kinds of rise behave differently afterwards.
A cycle reset is temporary by design. Within a week or two the discounting starts again, so the sensible response for motorists is to buy only what you need now and fill properly later. Our best time to fill up guide shows how long the slide usually takes.
A wholesale lift is stickier. It stays on the board until international prices or the dollar move the other way, and waiting does not help. E10 drivers in Caboolture should expect the same pressure, since E10 prices in Queensland sit a few cents under unleaded and move with it.
My reading is that Caboolture is seeing a bit of both this weekend, a Brisbane cycle reset with a wholesale push underneath it. The way to check is to watch the two grades separately. If unleaded petrol prices in Caboolture drift back down over the coming days while diesel holds, the cycle part is unwinding and the wholesale part is what remains. Whichever way it goes, keep an eye on the diesel board rather than the petrol one this week. Retailers can reset a petrol board whenever they like, but they have far less say over what the tanker cost.
