Kalgoorlie Unleaded Moved 4 Cents in Two Weeks While Perth Swung 24

Over the past fortnight, the typical unleaded price across Perth swung through a 24 cent range. Nearly 600 km east in Kalgoorlie, the typical price moved just 4 cents. Both markets are in the same state and sell the same fuel under the same FuelWatch rules. So why does one rock back and forth while the other barely moves?

What the numbers show

Petrolmate tracked official FuelWatch unleaded prices from 26th Sep to Sunday 11th Oct 2026, using a sample of 45 Perth metro servos and every Kalgoorlie and Boulder site with a price lodged for today.

Perth kept to its familiar weekly rhythm. The median fell to 225.9 on Tuesday 29th Sep, rose to 239.9 the next day, eased back to 229.9 by Tuesday 6th Oct, then lifted to 249.9 on Wednesday 7th Oct. Today it sits at 239.9.

Kalgoorlie's median sat at exactly 239.9 from 26th Sep to 6th Oct, stepped up to 242.9 on 7th Oct and has been 243.9 since Saturday.

Put the two side by side and the gap keeps changing sides. On Tuesday 6th Oct, Kalgoorlie was 10 cents dearer than Perth. A day later it was 7 cents cheaper. Kalgoorlie came in under Perth on only two of the 16 days, and across the whole fortnight Perth averaged about 236.1 against Kalgoorlie's 241.0, a gap of roughly 5 cents.

Why Perth cycles

Perth has hundreds of servos within a short drive of each other. When one trims a cent or two, it can win customers from several neighbours, so they follow. The cuts stack up day after day until margins are thin. Then a large retailer resets its price sharply, rivals follow within a day, and the slide starts again. Lately that reset has landed on a Wednesday.

Think of it this way. Shoppers at a row of market stalls selling identical apples can see every price at a glance. Knocking a few cents off pays, right up until nobody is making money and someone puts the price back up.

Why Kalgoorlie doesn't

Kalgoorlie has a dozen servos, and in a market that size a price cut doesn't win much. Every rival notices it straight away and can match it. The town's demand is fairly fixed, so there aren't many extra customers to take. With little reason to start a discounting run, prices hold steady and move in small, occasional steps.

Freight explains part of the higher floor, because fuel has to travel a long way from the coast. It doesn't explain why the price is so flat, though, and distance alone doesn't set the level either. Northam is under 100 km from Perth, yet its five servos have a median of 245.9 today, two cents above Kalgoorlie.

An 11 cent choice inside Kalgoorlie

Steady doesn't mean every board shows the same price. Fuel & Fly Kalgoorlie on Brookman St and Eagle West Kalgoorlie Truckstop on Brinsden Rd are both on 232.9. The nine BP, Caltex, Ampol, Reddy Express and Astron sites range from 242.9 to 245.9, with a median of 243.9. That's 11 cents between the two cheapest sites and the majors' median, or about $5.50 on a 50 litre tank. Both Eagle sites moved from 229.9 to 232.9 on 7th Oct, the same day as several of the majors, so even the discounters move in step here.

Coolgardie and the cost of switching

About 40 km down the Great Eastern Highway, the two servos in Coolgardie sit even higher: Ampol Coolgardie at 258.9 and Vibe Coolgardie at 258.7, about 15 cents above Kalgoorlie's median.

You might be wondering why anyone pays that. The answer is what economists call switching cost. A return trip to Kalgoorlie is about 80 km, which burns around 8 litres in a typical car, roughly $19 worth. Saving 15 cents a litre on a 50 litre fill is worth $7.50. Driving there just for fuel loses money, so Coolgardie's servos can price above Kalgoorlie without losing their locals. If you're heading into Kalgoorlie anyway, though, fill up there.

What this means for you

In Perth, timing matters most. Tuesday has been the cheapest day in both of the past two weeks, and our guide to the best time to fill up explains how to read the cycle. FuelWatch publishes tomorrow's prices at 2:30pm Perth time, so you can check before you go.

In Kalgoorlie there's no cheap day to wait for. The servo you choose matters far more than the day you fill, so compare unleaded petrol prices across town rather than holding off. You can follow both markets on our price trends page or across Western Australia.

Once you know why one market cycles and the other holds steady, the choice is simpler. In Perth, wait for the cheap day. In Kalgoorlie, pick the cheaper servo.
