Ampol is the modern incarnation of Caltex Australia, which began retailing fuel in Australia in 1936. The Ampol name itself dates to 1936 as the Australian Motorists Petrol Company. After Chevron sold its stake in Caltex Australia in 2020, the company rebranded the entire retail network to Ampol between 2020 and 2022. Today Ampol is an ASX-listed company (ALD) that operates the Lytton Refinery in Brisbane, one of only two remaining oil refineries in Australia. Its retail network comprises roughly 1,900 sites across every state and territory, including company-operated stations, EG Ampol sites run by EG Group, and branded independent locations.
Ampol positions as a mid-to-premium retailer. Company-operated metropolitan sites typically sit near the top of the market in price, while EG Ampol sites and franchise locations often compete more aggressively. On the east coast, Ampol participates in the standard fuel price cycle, typically moving in step with BP and Shell on both the climb and the drop. The Ampol-Woolworths Everyday Rewards partnership (4 cents per litre off with a qualifying Woolworths shop) is one of the most widely used fuel discount schemes in Australia, and effectively reprices Ampol as a discount brand for Woolworths shoppers.
Ampol offers two complementary loyalty pathways. AmpolCard is a traditional fuel charge card used primarily by small businesses and commercial customers, with direct account billing and national acceptance. For consumers, the main benefit is the Ampol partnership with Woolworths Everyday Rewards: spend at least $50 in one Woolworths transaction and receive a 4 cents per litre discount at participating Ampol, Caltex, EG Ampol, and Ampol Foodary sites. Everyday Extra members occasionally access enhanced offers of 10 cents per litre during promotional periods. Ampol also runs StarCard for fleet customers.
Ampol produces fuel at the Lytton Refinery in Brisbane and supplements with imports. Their flagship premium offering is Amplify Premium 98, a 98 RON petrol with a proprietary detergent additive package designed to reduce carbon deposits on intake valves and fuel injectors. Ampol also markets Amplify Diesel, positioned as their premium diesel with additional injector cleaning properties. Standard Ampol fuel (ULP 91, E10, 95, Regular Diesel) meets Australian Fuel Quality Standards without the premium additive package and is generally indistinguishable from other branded fuel at the base specification level.
