Leongatha and Wonthaggi Servos Cut Unleaded to 239.9 as the Gap to Melbourne Shrinks From 12 Cents to 3
Five servos across South Gippsland lodged the same new unleaded price within two minutes of each other on Monday morning. Between 9:19am and 9:21am on 2nd Nov, the sites in Korumburra, Inverloch, Wonthaggi and two in Leongatha all moved from 243.9 to 239.9. It was the third matching step from these five in a fortnight, and the rest of the area has now caught up.
All figures here come from official Victoria fuel price data, as at 8:00am AEDT on 4th Nov 2026.
Three steps, minutes apart
The official data lists the five sites under their town names, with no brand shown: Korumburra, Inverloch, Wonthaggi, Leongatha on Bair Street and Westside on Anderson Street. Since early September, all five have changed price on the same days, to the same figure. Each of the last three cuts landed at all five sites within half an hour:
- Tuesday 20th Oct, 9:41am to 10:10am: 249.9 to 247.9
- Thursday 29th Oct, 9:38am to 9:57am: 247.9 to 243.9
- Monday 2nd Nov, 9:19am to 9:21am: 243.9 to 239.9
That is 10 cents off since they reached 249.9 on 9th Oct, or $6.00 on a 60 litre tank. The climb was quicker: the same five sat on 229.9 in mid September and added 20 cents in about three weeks.
The gap to Melbourne
Across more than 850 Melbourne servos, the median unleaded price peaked at 242.9 on 13th Oct and was down to 235.9 by 20th Oct, a 7 cent fall in a week. The five South Gippsland sites came down 2 cents over the same week, so the gap widened.
Median unleaded at noon in the four towns, against Melbourne:
- 13th Oct: 249.9 against 242.9, a gap of 7.0 cents
- 26th Oct: 247.9 against 235.9, a gap of 12.0 cents
- 4th Nov (8am): 239.9 against 236.9, a gap of 3.0 cents
From 20th to 27th Oct, the five sites sat exactly 12.0 cents above the Melbourne median at noon every day. Since then, Melbourne has edged up a cent while the four towns have come down 8.
The rest of the area followed
Over the next two days, most of the other servos nearby matched or undercut the new price:
- Endeavour Korumburra went from 242.9 to 239.9 at 12:29pm Monday.
- EG Ampol Wonthaggi cut to 241.9 on Sunday and 240.9 at lunchtime Monday, then reached 239.9 at 3:02pm.
- EG Ampol Leongatha cut from 239.9 to 238.9 at 12:17pm Tuesday.
- Mobil Leongatha lodged 238.5 at 7:33am today, and United Leongatha is on 238.9.
- The Meeniyan servo showed 239.9 at 6am today, down from 248.9.
All 13 servos listing unleaded in Leongatha, Korumburra, Inverloch and Wonthaggi last lodged between 238.5 and 239.9, a spread of just 1.4 cents. That includes Shell, Mobil and Liberty in Wonthaggi, which last lodged 239.5 to 239.9 on Tuesday morning.
Two holdouts
Two more sites listed under their town names moved in the same half hour as the five on 20th and 29th Oct, but sat out Monday's cut. Mirboo North is still on 244.9 and Fish Creek on 245.9, which is 6.4 and 7.4 cents a litre more than Mobil Leongatha at 238.5.
E10 and diesel
Only two Leongatha servos list E10. Mobil is on 234.5 and United on 234.9, 3.2 and 3.6 cents above the Melbourne median of 231.3 for E10 prices.
Diesel runs the other way. Westside, Inverloch, Wonthaggi and United Leongatha list it at 277.9, 1.6 cents under the Melbourne median of 279.5, and Endeavour Korumburra is on 279.9. See current diesel prices for the wider picture.
What this means for your next fill
In any of the four towns, a 60 litre tank of unleaded now costs about $4.80 less than it did in the last week of October.
From Mirboo North or Fish Creek, filling in Leongatha at 238.5 saves 6.4 to 7.4 cents a litre, or $3.84 to $4.44 a tank. The savings calculator can run the numbers for your own car.
If you drive to Melbourne, the city no longer offers much of a discount. Of 855 Melbourne servos, 647 list unleaded at or under 239.9, so unless you pick a cheap site the saving is a few cents.
My read is that South Gippsland unleaded tends to move later than Melbourne, and in larger, shared steps. The next thing to watch is whether Mirboo North and Fish Creek come down to 239.9, which will show in the price trends and on the unleaded petrol prices page.
The numbers are clear: a fortnight ago, filling up in South Gippsland cost 12 cents a litre more than the Melbourne median. Today the gap is 3.
