WA Diesel Rises 5.6 Cents but Wheatbelt Towns Are Selling It 26 Cents Below the State Average
The number that caught my eye this afternoon is 26.1 cents. That is the gap between the servos in Mukinbudin, which are averaging 224.5 cents a litre for diesel, and the Western Australia state average of 250.6. As of 2:09pm AEST on 5th Aug 2026, the cheapest diesel in the state is sitting in the wheatbelt, not in Perth, and the same pattern repeats right across country WA. Regional towns beating the metro area on price is not how this market normally works.
The state picture: a modest lift with a very wide spread
Across the 1,228 stations reporting diesel prices in WA, the average moved from 245.0 yesterday to 250.6 today, a rise of 5.6 cents or 2.3 per cent. That is unwelcome news for anyone running a ute or towing for a living, though the eastern side of the country had it worse. New South Wales diesel lifted 15.7 cents to 249.3 over the same 24 hours, and the Northern Territory average moved sharply higher again. Against those numbers, WA's rise looks relatively contained.
The spread interests me more than the rise does. WA diesel today runs from 205.9 at the cheapest pump to 390.0 at the dearest, a gap of 184.1 cents and the widest range of any mainland state outside the Territory. When the best and worst pump in one state are separated by $1.84 a litre, where you fill matters far more than when.
The wheatbelt is quietly winning
The cheapest averages in the state are clustered in farming towns, not the metro area. Sorted cheapest to dearest, the list reads like a run through the grain country:
- Mukinbudin: average 224.5, with the cheapest pump at 210.0
- Darkan: average 229.4 across four servos, separated by just 1.0 cent
- Kulin: average 234.0
- Hyden: average 235.6 across six stations
- Mingenew: average 238.4
- Narrogin: average 238.6
- Wongan Hills: average 238.9
Every town on that list sits 12 to 26 cents below the state average. Bremer Bay on the south coast deserves a mention as well. Its cheapest diesel is 214.1, though the spread there runs to 41.6 cents, so the wrong servo choice erases the advantage entirely.
The usual rule is that country motorists pay a premium for distance. Not today. Diesel is the workhorse fuel of the wheatbelt, it runs the headers, the trucks and the utes, and the towns that burn the most of it are currently buying it cheapest.
Perth metro still has value pockets
The metro area is not shut out entirely. Beckenham is the one to watch: three servos averaging 229.4 with a spread of just 0.2 of a cent, the tightest pricing cluster in the state. That average would hold its own against most of the wheatbelt list above.
Other metro suburbs holding under the state average include Landsdale at 233.4, Naval Base at 234.6, Kwinana Beach at 235.9, Bassendean at 236.4 and Forrestfield at 237.3. The caution is Yangebup, which averages 238.9 but runs from 229.9 to 257.9. A 28 cent spread inside a single suburb means the average tells you very little about the driveway you pull into, so check before you commit.
What the gap is worth
On a 70 litre tank, filling at Mukinbudin's 224.5 average rather than the 250.6 state figure saves about $18.30. Find that 210.0 pump and the saving stretches past $28 a tank. Even inside Perth, choosing Beckenham at 229.4 over a servo sitting on the state average keeps roughly $14.80 in your pocket, for the same fuel bought on the same afternoon.
What the numbers mean for your next fill
Three things follow from the data.
- If you are driving through the wheatbelt, fill there rather than waiting until you are back in Perth. The value is out in the grain towns this week, not in the city.
- Within the metro area, Beckenham, Landsdale and Kwinana Beach are the value picks. Yangebup needs a price check first.
- With a 184 cent spread across the state, a look at price trends before a long trip is worth more in WA right now than in any other mainland state.
The numbers are clear: WA diesel lifted 5.6 cents today, but motorists who choose their servo carefully, whether in the wheatbelt or the right Perth suburb, can still buy well under 230 and save substantially on every tank.
