Vibe Ascot Undercuts Ampol Belmont by 20 Cents as Perth's Unleaded Cycle Sinks Lower

Vibe Ascot in Ascot is selling unleaded at 213.9 cents a litre, which ranked first on FuelWatch's statewide unleaded list this morning. Ampol Foodary Belmont in Belmont, 214 metres along Great Eastern Highway, is charging 233.9. That's a 20 cent gap, or $12 on a 60 litre tank, between two servos a few minutes' walk apart.

The difference is in how each one moves through Perth's weekly price cycle. Prices here were read at 2:09pm AEDT on 30th Oct 2026 (11:09am in Perth).

A sawtooth and a staircase

Ampol Foodary Belmont follows the Perth price cycle, and its price draws a sawtooth: a drift down to a Tuesday low, then a jump on Wednesday. It went from 225.9 to 249.9 on 13 and 14 Oct, from 213.9 to 239.9 on 20 and 21 Oct, and from 219.9 to 239.9 this Tuesday and Wednesday. Since then it has eased back to 233.9.

Vibe Ascot looks more like a staircase. It hasn't joined a Wednesday reset in the three weeks since 12 Oct, and on 14 Oct it added a single cent while the Ampol added 24. Its price stepped down from 232.7 on 12 Oct to 210.5 yesterday in small moves of up to 5 cents, then lifted 3.4 cents for today.

Over the 19 days from 12 to 30 Oct, Vibe Ascot averaged 222.3 and Ampol Foodary Belmont averaged 233.2. The Ampol was cheaper on only two of those days, both Tuesdays: 13 Oct (225.9 against 231.7) and 20 Oct (213.9 against 224.5).

Why the cycle exists

So why would any servo choose the sawtooth? The answer is competition between large chains that watch each other's boards closely.

Think of it this way. Each day one retailer shades its price below its neighbours to win customers, and the others match it. Eventually margins get very thin. Then one large retailer lifts sharply and the rest follow, because staying low earns little once the market has moved up. Economists call this pattern an Edgeworth cycle.

In Western Australia the cycle is unusually regular because of FuelWatch. Every servo must lodge the next day's price by 2pm and hold it for 24 hours, so prices change only once a day, and the reset has settled on Wednesdays.

The floor is moving down

Across about 460 Perth servos, the median Tuesday unleaded price was 235.9 on 13 Oct, 225.7 on 20 Oct and 219.9 on 27 Oct. That's a fall of 16 cents in two weeks.

The Wednesday peak has fallen less, from a median of 249.9 on 7 and 14 Oct to 239.9 on 21 and 28 Oct. This week's reset was a large one: 263 of 458 servos lifted 10 cents or more on Wednesday, and the median lift was 18 cents, against 10 cents the week before.

A falling floor has two broad explanations: cheaper wholesale fuel, or sharper competition at the bottom of the cycle. The servos that sit outside the cycle offer a clue. Vibe's 32 Perth sites had a median Tuesday price of 233.7 on 13 Oct and 215.7 on 27 Oct, and Atlas, with 12 sites, went from 233.6 to 215.9. When retailers that skip the reset cut by about as much as the wider market, that fits a fall in underlying costs better than one chain getting aggressive, although wholesale prices aren't part of this data.

What this means for your Friday fill

Today the Perth median is 229.9, with 154 servos on exactly that price and 109 on 233.9. That's 10 cents below the Friday median of 239.9 on 16 Oct.

Vibe sites sit well under their neighbours in other suburbs too. In Port Kennedy, Vibe Port Kennedy is on 218.3 while BP Port Kennedy, 100 metres away, is on 233.9. In Canning Vale, Vibe Canning Vale is on 213.9 and EG Ampol Canning Vale, 343 metres away, is on 229.9.

If your local servo is a cycler, the best time to fill up in Perth is still Tuesday, before the Wednesday lift. If it's a staircase servo like Vibe Ascot, the day of the week matters less than the address. FuelWatch publishes Saturday's prices at 2:30pm Perth time today, and you can compare unleaded petrol prices near you or follow the weekly price trends.

If next Tuesday's low comes in under this week's 219.9, the floor is still falling.
