Coles Express operated as the fuel retail arm of Coles Group from 2003 to 2023, running a national network of approximately 700 Shell-supplied service stations under the Coles Express brand. The joint venture gave Shell retail distribution through Coles, while Coles gained a high-traffic fuel network that reinforced its Flybuys loyalty ecosystem. In May 2023, Viva Energy completed the acquisition of the Coles Express business for approximately $300 million, bringing the network under the same ownership as the Shell-branded stations Viva operates across Australia. Progressive rebranding to Reddy Express began in 2024; some sites still display Coles Express signage during the transition.
Coles Express sites historically priced at a premium to independents and discounters, reflecting the Shell brand association and metro-heavy location strategy. After the Viva Energy acquisition, pricing policy is now set by Viva rather than Coles, and the network continues to participate in the east coast fuel price cycle in step with other major-branded sites. The 4 cents per litre Flybuys fuel discount remains the primary value proposition: combined with a $30+ Coles supermarket shop, Flybuys members still receive a fuel voucher valid at Coles Express and Reddy Express stations.
Flybuys remains integrated with Coles Express (and Reddy Express) despite the ownership change. Customers earn Flybuys points on fuel and in-store purchases, and most importantly can redeem 4 cents per litre fuel vouchers earned by spending $30 or more at Coles supermarkets, Coles Online, or participating Liquorland stores. The Shell-era Flybuys association at other Shell sites was discontinued after the Coles Express sale; Flybuys discounts no longer apply at standalone Shell stations. Only Coles Express and Reddy Express sites honour Flybuys fuel vouchers.
Coles Express stations sell Shell-specification fuel supplied by Viva Energy. The V-Power 98 RON premium fuel available at Coles Express is the same product sold at Shell stations and carries the same DYNAFLEX additive package. Standard fuel grades (ULP 91, E10, 95, Diesel) meet Australian Fuel Quality Standards. Post-acquisition, there has been no change to the fuel specifications or product lineup; the fuel is identical to what the stations sold under Shell-Coles branding prior to 2023.
